Fabian Schar has signed a one-year contract extension with Newcastle United through until the summer of 2026.
The 33-year-old centre-back has made the most Premier League appearances of any Newcastle player since Eddie Howe arrived as head coach in November 2021 and remains a mainstay of the XI.
A former Switzerland international, Schar’s previous deal was set to expire during the summer, but negotiations with his camp had been ongoing over the past few months and a 12-month extension has now been signed.
Everyone needs a Fabian Schär! 😍

Schar, who joined from Deportivo La Coruna in 2018, said: “I’m buzzing to extend my stay here. It’s been a very good few weeks for everybody at Newcastle United after winning the Carabao Cup and I’m really happy now to sign another contract with this amazing club.
“It’s my seventh season here and everybody knows how happy I am at the club and how comfortable I feel in the city, so I’m really glad to be continuing that. Now it’s about looking forward and finishing the season as strong as possible.”

While Howe is looking to recruit a right-sided centre-back this summer, the head coach desires greater depth in that position, and a succession plan for Schar is needed.
“Fabian has been outstanding in my time at the club,” Howe said. “As well as his performances on the pitch, he has shown a fantastic attitude in the group.
“He has been the heartbeat of the club’s season so far, and he’ll continue to be a key player for us as we strive to finish as high in the table as possible.”
“Schar remains a vital member of Howe’s starting XI”
The odd error may have crept into Schar’s performances this season and he is now 33, yet the centre-half remains a vital member of Howe’s starting XI.
His ability to play out from the back, using his excellent passing range, is a vital component of Newcastle’s attacking strategy.
Ideally, in 2025-26, Schar will not be an automatic starter every week.
A right-sided centre-half has been sought since the first post-takeover window and is yet to arrive, and Schar needs greater competition, while Howe requires a younger alternative around who he can build his side.
Yet retaining Schar’s experience and his quality, on top of recruiting another defender, will only improve the prospects of Newcastle having a successful season in the Premier League and in Europe across 2025-26.
