The Las Vegas Raiders are doubling down on their latest quarterback acquisition.
Just weeks after trading for Geno Smith, the team has signed the veteran signal-caller to a two-year contract extension, solidifying his role as their starter for the foreseeable future.

Raiders double down on Geno Smith
According to multiple reports, Smith’s new deal is worth $75 million, with $66.5 million guaranteed, and could reach $88.5 million if certain performance incentives are met.
Smith’s arrival in Las Vegas comes after a turbulent 2024 season in which the Raiders cycled through quarterbacks Gardner Minshew, Aidan O’Connell, and Desmond Ridder, none of whom provided the stability the team desperately needed.
With a 4-13 record and a combined passer rating of just 80.05 from their quarterbacks, the Raiders were in search of a long-term solution.
Now, with the 34-year-old Smith under center and reunited with head coach Pete Carroll, the team is betting on his experience to lead them back to playoff contention.
Smith’s extension positions him among the league’s better-paid quarterbacks, tying him with Derek Carr as the 16th highest in average annual value.
While some may question the price tag, the Raiders are confident in Smith’s ability to stabilize the position.
His familiarity with Carroll, whom he played under for five seasons in Seattle, was a key factor in the team’s decision.
Raiders general manager John Spytek recently addressed the signing, highlighting Carroll’s endorsement of Smith’s leadership and work ethic as a major influence.
However, the move does raise concerns.
Smith will turn 35 in October, and the Raiders are in the midst of a significant rebuild. Competing in the AFC West, home to Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert, means Las Vegas must make considerable roster upgrades beyond just the quarterback position.
Whether Smith can be the bridge to a more competitive future or simply a stopgap remains to be seen.
With the 2025 NFL Draft class lacking a clear-cut franchise quarterback, the Raiders opted for experience over uncertainty.
While younger options like Sam Darnold and Justin Fields were available at lower price points, neither had the built-in familiarity with Carroll that Smith brings.
The question now is whether this reunion can yield success in a division stacked with top-tier competition.
For the Raiders, the gamble is clear: stability now, while hoping for greater success down the road.
Time will tell if Smith can deliver on that promise.
