Jon Scheyer’s Duke Blue Devils have been smooth, pro-level bucket-getters all season long. Kelvin Sampson’s Houston Cougars are immiserating offenses and sanding down games in clutch time. We have a fantastic Final Four draw on Saturday night, with Cooper Flagg and his crew favored at tip-off. Duke is in pursuit of its sixth national championship. Houston has never won it all and last reached the title game as “Phi Slamma Jamma” some four decades ago.

The Cougars labored to get past Purdue in the Sweet 16, but bounced back and breezed by Tennessee at the Elite Eight. The swarming, frenetic Sampsonites forced the Volunteers into some truly unmentionable shooting splits: 28.8 percent from the field, 17.2 percent on 3s. Sheesh. Houston has been perched atop Division-I in scoring defense and defensive rating all year, and it has shown up to the Madness ready for rock fights.

Its offense was locked in last time out. Junior guard Emanuel Sharp lived up to his name from the perimeter, hitting four 3s on 10 tries. Fifth-year guard L.J. Cryer had a well-rounded 17/7/4 line, and the whole team had three turnovers. All-Big 12 bucket Milos Uzan had an off night, but he was the go-to scorer in the Sweet 16 squeaker with a game-high 22 points.
Houston has had a banner year from end-to-end, but Vegas is spotting the Cougars a two-possession spread here. Duke has been electric in postseason play, first winning the ACC tournament with Flagg on the shelf, then cruising past Baylor, Arizona and Alabama in quick order. Flagg just put together one of the best freshman efforts in basketball history, headlined with AP Player of the Year honors on Friday. Already celebrated as an elite-level NBA prospect at 18, he and his aspirations get a proper staging with an Alamodome Final Four. This is no-excuses, must-see stuff.
Duke’s scoring punch is consistent and well-rounded. Against Alabama, fellow freshman Kon Knueppel had a 21/5/5 line with three steals, while junior Tyrese Proctor shot 7-for-10 and South Sudanese center Khaman Maluach was 6-for-7 at the rim. Saturday’s style clash puts a hyper-efficient offense against a manic, old-school defense. It should be a good one ahead of Monday’s final, where the winner of this game will play Auburn or Florida.
