King Charles has found himself indirectly involved in the growing controversy surrounding Prince Andrew and his alleged ties to a Chinese businessman believed to be working as a spy for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
According to newly unsealed court documents, the monarch was personally briefed about an investment venture involving Yang Tengbo – a man who has since been banned from the United Kingdom on national security grounds.
The bombshell revelations stem from a witness statement submitted by Dominic Hampshire, a senior aide to Prince Andrew, in support of Yang’s legal appeal against his exclusion from the UK.
In his statement, Hampshire detailed two meetings with then-Prince Charles between December 2023 and May 2024, during which discussions reportedly included the now-defunct Eurasia Fund – an investment initiative focused on bringing Chinese money into African renewable energy projects.
Although the King has not been accused of any wrongdoing, the documents suggest that he was aware of some of the business opportunities involving Yang. Still, there is no evidence to indicate that King Charles had any knowledge of national security concerns surrounding the businessman at the time.
A meeting of royals and rising red flags
The context behind these revelations is Prince Andrew’s increasingly limited public and financial role within the royal family following the fallout from his association with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
In an effort to reinvent his public image and secure new business ventures, Andrew and his team sought external investment, leading them to the Eurasia Fund and Yang Tengbo – also known by the name Chris.
According to Hampshire’s testimony, he became aware of growing security concerns about Yang as early as December 2021. He claimed he was summoned by Sir Edward Young, then the private secretary to Queen Elizabeth II, and told that there were red flags raised by British intelligence.
Hampshire recounted challenging Sir Edward’s warning, asking: “What do you expect me to do with this information? Chris is pretty much our only avenue for The Duke moving forward and arguably the only light at the end of the tunnel for him. Do you have a plan B?”
When he did not receive further clarity, Hampshire turned to Lord Chamberlain Lord Parker, a former MI5 director general, but said he received no useful guidance. It wasn’t until five months later, according to Hampshire, that he finally met with intelligence officers who stated their “genuine concerns” about Yang’s level of influence over the Duke of York. Despite that meeting, he claimed the message was ambiguous.
“I said, ‘are you asking me to stop?’ She said, ‘no, I can’t ask you to stop. But we have genuine concerns about Chris and his influence on The Duke of York,'” he noted.
One particularly notable revelation from Hampshire’s statement is that Prince Andrew allegedly continues to send birthday greetings to Chinese President Xi Jinping each year – something Hampshire claimed was “encouraged” by Buckingham Palace.
