Shedeur Sanders is sending a message loud and clear to NFL front offices: overlook him at your own risk.
The Colorado Buffaloes quarterback didn’t hold back following his Pro Day, where he showcased his arm, mobility, and poise in front of NFL scouts.
Sanders, a projected top-10 pick in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft, took the spotlight not just for his performance on the field, but also for his words off it. Speaking with ESPN, Sanders delivered a bold statement about his draft stock.
“All I need is opportunity. Simple,” Sanders said. “Whatever franchise wants to change the franchise, there’s no doubt who to go with. I’ve done it over and over and over. So you’ll be a fool not to pick me.”
Sanders, the son of Colorado head coach and NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, has every reason to be confident.
Over the course of his college career – first at Jackson State and then at Colorado – he threw for more than 14,300 yards, tallied 134 touchdowns, and maintained a completion percentage above 65.9%. In 2024 alone, he threw 37 touchdown passes while completing 74% of his throws.
Titans decision sparks fiery response from Sanders
The fire behind Sanders‘ recent comments may have been sparked by what didn’t happen.
According to NFL insider Todd McShay, the Tennessee Titans canceled private workouts with both Sanders and Colorado teammate Travis Hunter – a sign that they are likely locking in quarterback Cam Ward as the No. 1 overall pick.
That snub didn’t sit well with Sanders, who reportedly wasn’t extended a private invite to Titans facilities despite his stellar production.
When asked by ESPN what quality matters most in a quarterback, Sanders turned the question back: “Let me ask you a question. What’s the most important trait of a quarterback?”
After the reporter answered with “decision-making and accuracy,” Sanders responded: “Consistency… Look at the last four years.”
As the Titans lean toward Cam Ward, and the Cleveland Browns focus on cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter with the second pick, speculation grows over where Sanders will land.
The New York Giants could be a destination at No. 3, though their signings of veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston might suggest they wait on selecting a quarterback.
If not the Giants, the Las Vegas Raiders at No. 6 – a team in need of a long-term solution under center – may find themselves in position to grab the highly touted passer.
Why teams may regret letting Sanders slide
Sanders‘ path to the draft has been anything but traditional. He flipped the script on expectations by elevating Jackson State’s profile before transferring to a Power Five school.
He then held his own against elite competition in the Pac-12, further proving he can adapt, lead, and deliver under pressure.
With an edge of frustration and determination in his voice, Sanders‘ message couldn’t be clearer: “You’ll be a fool not to pick me.” And in a league where a single draft decision can change a franchise’s fate, his words might end up being prophetic.
