Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may be united in marriage, but when it comes to raising their royal children, the couple is reportedly clashing behind the scenes.
According to The Sun’s royal editor Matt Wilkinson, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are not on the same page about how much exposure their kids – Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3 – should have in the public eye.
Speaking on Hello! magazine’s Right Royal podcast, Wilkinson claimed that Harry is strongly opposed to putting his children in the spotlight, while Meghan is more open to a California-style, public-facing family life.
“My understanding of this is that, up to a certain stage, Harry would much rather his children were not seen,” Wilkinson said. “He’s got this idea that if he takes them outside of Montecito, there’s a horde of us out there trying to take pictures of his kids. They’re not, by the way!”
Meghan does things her way
Meghan, however, appears to have a different perspective. “She grew up in California,” Wilkinson continued. “She once said she’d like a more California-style lifestyle – take them down the beach, go out, do stuff. She doesn’t want to hide them away.”
That tension has seemingly played out in real-time through carefully curated public appearances. While Meghan has shared glimpses of the children, their faces are rarely shown – a likely compromise between Harry’s desire for privacy and Meghan’s growing lifestyle brand.
In recent months, Markle has shared back-facing photos of Lilibet on social media – including a snap from the launch of her new lifestyle brand, As Ever, and a family boating moment on International Women’s Day.
Another image showed Lilibet spending time at home with family friend Serena Williams. And the family’s 2024 Christmas card featured Archie and Lilibet running to their parents – but again, no clear shots of their faces.
Is Markle using her children?
Wilkinson raised the question of whether Meghan is using her children to craft a specific brand image. “You could argue that Meghan isn’t exploiting the children – well, maybe she is – but she’s using them to display her brand. She’s a mother. A homemaker. Cooking at home.”
In her Netflix series With Love, Meghan, the duchess is seen preparing for a children’s party – but none of the kids, including her own, make an appearance on screen.
The couple has yet to officially comment on the claims – but it seems that even in the royal-adjacent world of Montecito, parenting comes with its fair share of disagreements.
