El alemán Max Schachmann (31 años) es el primer líder de la Itzulia tras marcar el mejor tiempo en la CRI que abrió la carrera vasca. No fue un lunes bueno para Enric Mas. El de Movistar cedió más de un minuto con respecto a Joao Almeida, que será una de las bazas de UAE y se dejó tiempo con la mayor parte de los candidatos a volver a casa con el amarillo. Pablo Castrillo (Movistar Team), el mejor español, perdió 22 segundos y Pello Bilbao (Bahrain) cedió 27.

El líder más estable con la mayor parte de los ciclistas ya en carrera o habiendo finalizado la misma fue Max Schachmann (Soudal), que esperó en vanguardia durante largo tiempo. No le birló el trono Joao Almeida (UAE) por un puñado de décimas de segundo, pero el recorrido del portugués fue avanzadilla para lo que hizo después su compañero McNulty, que parecía destinado al salto pero no pudo culminar tras estar desde el primer control por debajo del ganador. Lipowitz (Red Bull) también hizo una muy buena carrera y sólo tardó un segundo más que Schachmann en completar el día.
La novedad de esta primera jornada de la Itzulia no estuvo en abrirse con una CRI, sino en la forma que se produjo. La salida se dio desde el interior del Buesa Arena, pabellón donde juega habitualmente sus partidos de baloncesto el Baskonia. Allí se levantó un podio de impulso y los ciclistas iniciaron la carrera observando a su lado como unos maniquís vestían los maillots que cada etapa lucirán los mejores en las distintas clasificaciones. Las primeras imágenes de cada andadura fueron tomadas por un dron que sobrevoló la cancha.
En un trazado de 16,5 kilómetros por carreteras adyacentes, ya que la meta también estuvo en el Buesa aunque se instaló en el exterior, mandó la constancia y decidió el sentirse cómodo en el rodar. La primera bala la lanzó Campenaerts, que hizo una primera parte de etapa brillante. Parecía que el suyo sería un tiempo buenísimo, pero tanto ímpetu le pasó factura. El de Visma salió a competir en una tarde que fue de descanso para otros como Thibau Nys, ganador del último GP Miguel Indurain, que fue doblado por Fisher Black.

El ordenamiento de la crono no debería tener influencia absoluta en la etapa de este martes, la primer en línea, que unirá Pamplona y Lodosa (199,8 km). El trazado es proclive a que haya leña constante, en una etapa sin grandes desniveles pero con varias subidas y bajadas. Los favoritos no se perderán de vista y los que verán los puestos finales de honor desde lejos querrán moverse para hacer una fuga. “Para nosotros es la carrera del año. No será fácil porque estamos en otra categoría y los rivales son muy complicados”, apuntó Iñaki Isasi, presidente de la Fundación Euskadi y cabeza visible de Euskaltel.
