Er ist eine der heißesten ablösefreien Aktien des Sommertransfer-Fensters. Virgil van Dijk, Kapitän des FC Liverpool, hat nur noch Vertrag bis Saisonende. Wie es für ihn weitergeht, steht noch nicht fest. Doch jetzt deutet er eine baldige Entscheidung an.

Angesprochen auf seine Zukunft, antwortet van Dijk vielsagend: „Wir machen Fortschritte bei meinem neuen Vertrag hier. Ich liebe den Verein und die Fans. Wir arbeiten daran, und es gibt Fortschritte. Wir sind in Gesprächen.“
Eine Liebeserklärung, die in einen neuen Vertrag mündet?
Könnte sein. Vor zwei Wochen klang das noch ganz anders. Da sagte van Dijk über seinen auslaufenden Vertrag: „Vor dem Ende der Saison wird es Neuigkeiten geben. In der Zwischenzeit werde ich mich voll engagieren und auf die vor mir liegende Aufgabe konzentrieren. Ich liebe den Verein, das ist die Hauptsache. So bin ich nun einmal.“
[–>Wie wichtig der Kapitän für die Mannschaft und den Verein ist, zeigt er einmal mehr in dieser Saison. Er ist der Anführer und steht vor seinem zweiten Meistertitel mit Liverpool nach 2020. Sieben Spieltage vor Schluss hat der Klub elf Punkte Vorsprung auf Verfolger Arsenal. In allen 31 Partien stand er über die volle Spielzeit auf dem Platz, verpasste somit keine einzige Minute.
Van Dijk wechselte im Januar 2018 für die damalige Rekordsumme für einen Verteidiger von satten 84,65 Mio. Euro von Southampton. Ein Deal, der sich mehr als ausgezahlt hat. Van Dijk ist zu einem der besten Innenverteidiger der Welt, wenn nicht sogar zum besten der vergangenen Jahre, gereift, hat seine Anlagen aus Körpergröße und Tempo mit der nötigen Ruhe im Spielaufbau und seinen Leaderqualitäten garniert. Auch ein Kreuzbandriss im Oktober 2020 hat ihn nicht zurückgeworfen.
Es sieht alles danach aus, dass er auch in der kommenden Saison für die Reds auf Titeljagd geht – und dann vielleicht auf die Mission Titelverteidigung in der Premier League …
