Travis Hunter, the Heisman-winning sensation, left an indelible mark on the Colorado Buffaloes, dazzling fans and scouts alike with his unique ability to dominate both sides of the ball. As a receiver, he hauled in passes from close friend and quarterback Shedeur Sanders, while on defense, he channeled the spirit of his former coach, Deion Sanders, and shut down opponents with flair.
Hunter was the linchpin in Colorado’s rapid turnaround, transforming a program that stumbled to a 1-11 record in 2022 into a 9-4 top-25 ranked by 2024. His college stats are nothing short of staggering: 171 receptions for 2,167 yards and 24 touchdowns on offense, paired with 87 tackles, nine interceptions and 26 pass breakups on defense. In his senior season, he won the Fred Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s top receiver and the Chuck Bednarik Award as the top defensive player, setting a Colorado record with 14 touchdown catches and becoming the first Buffalo to record four consecutive 100-yard games.
Hunter’s Big Deal Before the NFL Draft
As Hunter sets his sights on the NFL, he’s already making moves off the field. Panini America, a titan in the trading card world, recently signed an exclusive autographed trading card deal with the Colorado standout. This partnership will feature Hunter across Panini’s NFL offerings, from their Instant Card platform to various promotional efforts.
Jason Howarth, Panini’s Senior VP of Marketing and Athlete Relations, couldn’t hide his excitement: “Travis is a unique talent who has shined both on and off the field.” For Hunter, it’s a personal milestone – he grew up collecting Panini cards, and now he’s thrilled to see his rookie card hit the global market. “It’s unreal to think that fans around the world will be able to get my card,” he said. With an NIL portfolio that already includes names like Adidas, United Airlines, and EA Sports, this deal further solidifies Hunter’s rising star as he enters the pros.
The NFL Awaits: Where Will Hunter Land?
With the NFL Draft approaching, Hunter’s name is lighting up conversations everywhere. ESPN’s Adam Schefter has pegged the Cleveland Browns as a possible landing spot, potentially nabbing him with the No. 2 pick. It’s an intriguing fit – Hunter could be the jolt Cleveland needs, though pairing him with Kenny Pickett and receivers like Jerry Jeudy and David Njoku might not set the league on fire right away. Alternatively, the New York Giants, sitting at No. 3, could snatch him up and create a youthful, explosive duo with Malik Nabers.
The bigger question is positional: Hunter is dead set on playing both receiver and cornerback, echoing Deion Sanders’ two-way legacy, but it is not comparable because Hunter completed the entire season playing both positions and expects to do so in the NFL. He’s got the skills, and Deion has his back, but the grueling pace of the NFL makes it a tough sell. Focusing on one role could allow him to shine brighter, though it’ll depend on the vision of his future coach. Either way, Hunter’s versatility has teams dreaming big.
