KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An apparent leg injury forced Pablo López to exit Tuesday night’s Twins-Royals game early.
The Twins pitcher’s best start of the season was interrupted when López grabbed the back of his right leg in between pitches with two outs in the fifth inning.
Standing on the mound after he walked Jonathan India, López held a brief conversation with shortstop Carlos Correa, who signaled to the dugout for the training staff. Without throwing a warmup pitch, López left the field.

Facing Royals ace Cole Ragans, López looked outstanding early, retiring the first 10 batters he faced. The strong start was much-needed for a beleaguered Twins bullpen, which covered 12 1/3 innings over the previous three games.
Following rain-delayed starts in St. Louis and Chicago, López got plenty of swings-and-misses early, recording five strikeouts his first time through the lineup. López finally surrendered a hit to Bobby Witt Jr. with one out in the fourth inning, a double that — along with two defensive miscues — led to the only run he would allow.
López returned in the fifth and retired the first two batters he faced before yielding a single to Kyle Isbel and walking India, which brought Witt back to the plate. Before Witt stepped in, Correa noticed López looking uncomfortable and headed to the mound for a discussion.
López allowed an unearned run, three hits and one walk while striking out six over 4 2/3 innings.
