Meghan Markle‘s latest trip to Manhattan caused more of a stir for her motorcade than her presence on the red carpet. The Duchess of Sussex was spotted en route to a Broadway showing of Gypsy Thursday night and her security entourage was anything but subtle.
According to Page Six, the 43-year-old former actress was transported in a convoy that included three black SUVs and an unmarked NYPD police car.
Markle, who rode in one of the SUVs, was reportedly accompanied by former Secret Service agents hired as part of her private protection team. Meanwhile, the other two SUVs served as decoys – empty except for their drivers – designed to throw paparazzi off her trail.
As for the unmarked police vehicle, it contained two NYPD intelligence detectives, adding a government presence to her private security detail that some critics are calling excessive.
Comparisons to other A-listers spark scrutiny over use of NYPD resources
A well-placed paparazzi source didn’t hold back, labeling Markle‘s multi-vehicle escort “absolutely abnormal, totally over-the-top and excessive.”
In contrast, the source noted that mega-celebrities like Taylor Swift typically travel with just two cars: one for themselves and one for security.
“Taylor [Swift] usually has two cars – her car that she’s in and a security car with her team,” the insider said, according to Page Six. “No one gets police escorts.”
The source also highlighted that other A-list stars – including Kim Kardashian, Beyonce, Jay-Z, and Rihanna – typically operate with fewer vehicles, unless they’re accompanied by family.
“Meghan is out of control and over-the-top, and it’s ridiculous if the city is paying for this,” the source added. “And if NYPD was not on duty, then they shouldn’t be allowed to run lights. Somebody’s got to be paying for it.”
However, another insider defended the duchess’s security setup, saying that NYPD support can be granted when requested by a celebrity’s security team – depending on threat levels and circumstances.
“It’s something that can be made available based on the threat assessment and the circumstances of where they’re going and what they’re doing,” the source explained.
Although one uniformed NYPD officer was seen near the duchess, that may have been a standard traffic control post rather than part of her requested detail.
