Ja, das bekomme ich schon mit. Es ist auch eine schöne Bestätigung für die investierte Arbeit und die Leistungen auf dem Eis, aber sicherlich kein Grund, sich zurückzulehnen.

Sie stehen kurz davor, zum ersten Mal Torschützenkönig in der NHL zu werden. 2020 waren Sie MVP und Liga-Topscorer. Welche Auszeichnung bedeutet Ihnen am meisten?

Sie sind alle schön und machen mich stolz. Aber ich würde jede Trophäe hergeben, um einmal den Stanley Cup hochzuhalten.

In der vergangenen Saison waren Sie nur einen Sieg vom Stanley Cup entfernt, verloren in Spiel 7 der Finalserie gegen Florida. Glauben Sie, dass Ihnen die Erfahrung beim nächsten Mal helfen wird?

Ja, ich denke schon. Wir haben in den letzten Jahren jedes Szenario schon mal erlebt, das uns in den Play-offs begegnen kann – inklusive Spiel 7 im Finale.

Wir sind als Team schwer zu schlagen, wenn wir in kompletter Besetzung unser Potenzial abrufen. Deshalb bin ich optimistisch. Wir wissen aber auch, dass LA eine unangenehme Mannschaft ist, die nur wenige Gegentore zulässt und in dieser Saison ex­trem heimstark ist.

Sie haben einen neuen Achtjahresvertrag mit No-Trade-Klausel bei den Oilers unterschrieben. Ist damit klar, dass Sie Ihre ganze Karriere in Edmonton bleiben?

Das ist definitiv das Ziel.

Im Sommer überholen Sie mit einem Gehalt von 16,5 Millionen Dollar Auston Matthews als NHL-Rekordverdiener …

Ich betrachte es als Anerkennung meiner Leistung. In fast allen Statistiken der letzten fünf Jahre bin ich oben dabei.

Es fällt auf, dass Sie Ihren Mundschutz oft nicht richtig im Mund haben. Fürchten Sie nicht um Ihre Zähne?

Eigentlich nicht, obwohl ich vor zwei oder drei Jahren mal einen halben Schneidezahn verloren habe. Der Zahnarzt hat es aber gut hinbekommen, dass man davon gar nichts mehr sieht.

Im vergangenen Sommer haben Sie sich mit Ihrer Freundin Celeste verlobt. Bedeutet das, dass es im Sommer mindestens einen Ring gibt, nämlich den Ehering?

Ja, der wird kommen. Die Planung überlasse ich größtenteils Celly. Sie hat da mein vollstes Vertrauen.
