Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin is known for speaking his mind-and occasionally stirring the pot. His latest target? The University of Miami’s $4.3 million investment in quarterback Carson Beck.
Beck left Georgia this offseason, chasing both a new opportunity and a serious NIL payday. But after word spread that the Hurricanes shelled out more than $4 million for his services, eyebrows started to rise-including Kiffin’s.
Carson Beck, Georgia QB, walking out from the Clemson clash
During a guest spot on The Pivot Podcast, Kiffin was asked about NIL money and how it’s reshaping the college football landscape. When Beck’s deal came up, the Rebels coach didn’t hold back.
“Miami gave him $4.3 million?” Kiffin said, feigning shock. “Did they watch his game against us?”
NIL deals are skyrocketing-but so are expectations
Beck’s performance against Ole Miss last fall wasn’t exactly highlight-reel material. In a 28-10 loss, he threw for just 186 yards, failed to score a touchdown, and tossed an interception. He looked visibly frustrated on the sidelines-and Kiffin clearly hasn’t forgotten.
To be fair, Beck isn’t alone in the NIL spotlight. Former Tennessee QB Nico Iamaleava reportedly tried to match Beck’s deal but came up short, settling for $1.5 million annually at UCLA, per On3. The race for top-dollar quarterback talent is heating up, and not every school is walking away happy.
Some critics have pointed out the irony of Kiffin making jokes about huge contracts while pulling in a $9 million salary himself. But Kiffin’s history of jabs, shade, and sarcasm is well documented-and it’s part of what makes him one of college football’s most entertaining voices.
Whether Beck lives up to the hype in Miami remains to be seen. But for now, Kiffin’s got the scoreboard-and the last laugh.
