When Travis Hunterannounced he was heading to the NFL, it left more than just a talent gap at Colorado-it left a crater.
Hunter didn’t just rack up video game numbers (96 receptions, 1,258 yards, 15 touchdowns). He locked down receivers, too, adding four interceptions and 10 breakups on defense. Simply put, there’s no true replacement for a player like that. But that doesn’t mean Deion Sanders isn’t trying to find one.
Done with it! Deion Sanders publicly calls out a university for allegedly tampering with his players
One name making noise in Boulder: Hykeem Williams.
The former five-star Florida State wide receiver entered the transfer portal earlier this month and has already scheduled visits with Colorado, Syracuse, and Pitt, per 247 Sports. A Fort Lauderdale native and Broward County Athlete of the Year (via The Miami Herald), Williams brings serious upside-and a résumé that made him a top-25 national recruit in 2023 (Rivals, ESPN).
The Buffaloes need a new playmaker-Is Williams ready to step up?
Though Williams isn’t the two-way phenom Hunter was, he could help Colorado stay explosive on offense. He showed flashes at FSU, averaging nearly 12 yards per catch in 2024 while pulling in 16 receptions for 187 yards and a touchdown. Not eye-popping stats, but his talent is obvious-especially when you watch him stretch the field.
And unlike Hunter, Williams still has two years of eligibility. That gives Coach Prime something even more valuable than hype: time. Time to develop, to learn the system, and to grow into a featured role.
Colorado’s receiver room is in flux, and bringing in a player with Williams’ size, speed, and recruiting pedigree could be the spark they need. With other FSU players like Trever Jackson and Jaylen Early also hitting the portal, Sanders might be forming a Florida-to-Boulder pipeline.
It won’t be easy to follow in Travis Hunter’s footsteps. But if Hykeem Williams ends up in Colorado, he won’t have to be a copy-he’ll just need to be a star in his own right.
