Coach Prime just pulled a powerfully sweet dad move that’s got all of Boulder talking – and not just because of what he did, but who he did it with.
At Colorado’s Black & Gold spring game, Deion Sanders officially retired his son Shedeur Sanders’ iconic No. 2 jersey, closing a historic chapter in Buffaloes football. But it wasn’t just a coaching milestone – it was a family affair.
In a full-circle, feel-good moment, Deion brought ex-wife Pilar Sanders, Shedeur’s mom, back into the spotlight for the tribute, and the internet’s swooning over the unity. Pilar, who doubles as Shedeur’s publicist and full-time cheerleader, made the journey to Boulder one last time, posting a heartfelt video from the drive.
“Taking this one last drive in to retire my son’s jersey number #2… it’s been amazing,” she wrote, channeling high vibes and legendary mom energy. The Sanders co-parenting glow-up was on full display, and fans couldn’t get enough.
Controversy surrounds the Sanders
But Shedeur wasn’t the only star getting flowers. Travis Hunter, the two-way phenom and another Coach Prime protégé, also had his No. 12 jersey retired in the same ceremony. Deion beamed with pride, saying, “I looked in both of their eyes – I know they were pleased, they were thankful, and they were proud.”
Still, not everyone was cheering. The double jersey retirement stirred instant controversy, with critics slamming it as premature – especially since neither player has taken an NFL snap yet. In 135 years of Colorado football, only four jerseys had ever been retired. Now, two more are gone in one swoop, and some aren’t thrilled.
Coach Prime didn’t back down
“Let’s get the elephant out of the room,” Sanders said at a press conference. “I don’t want to talk about this too long… If his last name wasn’t Sanders, we wouldn’t have this discussion.”
Bold, emotional, and entirely Coach Prime – the Sanders family just gave college football one more unforgettable moment before Shedeur takes his talents to the next level.
