Vloni Slovan s koučem Lubošem Kozlem zakončil základní část se ziskem čtyřiceti bodů. K vysněné skupině o titul mu jeden chyběl. Respektovaný trenér přitom nebyl na jaře v jednoduché situaci, neboť v zimní pauze přišel o jednoho z klíčových hráčů Lukáše Červa, Christian Frýdek byl zraněn a po posilách Kozel volal marně. Klub navíc procházel složitým obdobím převádění organizace z jednoho majitele na druhého. Sedmé místo proto tehdy mělo svou cenu.
Kozla vystřídal Radoslav Kováč a ani on se neocitl vůbec v jednoduché situaci. Už tak složitou pozici umocňovala i zbytečně chvástavá prohlášení ve fotbale nezkušeného nového majitele Ondřeje Kanii. Modrobílí pod Kováčem uhráli o dva body více než před rokem, opět jim však vysněná skupina o titul o malý kousek utekla.
I tentokrát má sedmé místo svou hodnotu, byť ve stínu posledního kola to tak nevypadá. Vždyť týmu Radoslava Kováče stačilo ve 30. ligovém zápase před vlastními fanoušky neprohrát s Karvinou, která pod Ještědem nikdy v historii netriumfovala, a vysněnou top šestku by udržel. Poprvé po čtyřech letech. Už v příštím víkendu by pod Ještěd zavítala Slavia a je možné, že by před zaplněným stadionem v ostře sledovaném zápase již slavila mistrovský titul. Jenže Liberec s Karvinou 2:3 padl a místo konfrontace s nejlepšími ho čeká málo atraktivní skupina o umístění, která je prakticky o ničem.
Před startem podzimní i jarní části sice na severu vyhlašovali za cíl účast mezi elitou už v první přelomové sezoně a masivně investovali do kádru. Za poslední rok Liberec do posil napumpoval přes sto milionů korun. Ještě před měsícem a půl však byla účast Slovanu ve skupině o titul utopií, díky obdivuhodnému zlepšení v závěru, ale i klopýtání soupeřů o ni bojoval až do poslední chvíle.
Sedmé místo však vypovídá o reálném stavu věcí. Až v závěru soutěže si nový tým začal sedat. Během posledních týdnů na sebe upozornil Santiago Eneme, skvěle hrál Šimon Gabriel s Dominikem Plechatým, blýskl se Josef Koželuh či Raimonds Krollis. Všichni jsou kmenovými hráči klubu, nikoli na hostování. U Nisy mají na čem stavět, byť po sezoně do Plzně zamíří nejlepší střelec Slovanu Denis Višinský, pravděpodobně odejde i Christian Frýdek. Oběma končí smlouva. Velkým příslibem však mohou být již oznámené příchody Lukáše Maška a Vojtěcha Stránského z Mladé Boleslavi.
Letošní sedmé místo je daní za rozsáhlou přestavbu kádru. Ani Bůh nestvořil svět za jeden den. Potřeboval jich sedm.
