UCLA quarterback Joey Aguilar is expected to enter the transfer portal, a source briefed on the decision confirmed to The Athletic.
Aguilar, a transfer from Appalachian State, entered the portal in December during the winter transfer window and chose the Bruins, where he went through spring football and was competing for the starting job. But the quarterback depth chart changed significantly on Sunday, when former Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava signed with UCLA.

In two seasons at App State, Aguilar started 24 games, throwing for 6,760 yards, 56 touchdowns and 24 interceptions. He also ran for 452 yards and five touchdowns. The former junior college quarterback was granted an extra year of eligibility in the winter as a result of the NCAA’s blanket waiver for junior college players in the wake of Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia’s antitrust lawsuit.
Aguilar was expected to be in good position to compete for the starting job at UCLA prior to Iamaleava’s arrival. Last week, when rumors of Iamaleava’s transfer surfaced, a source briefed on Aguilar’s thinking said that he intended to stay and compete for the job.
But the same source said that Aguilar has had a change of heart and that he will look to spend his final season of eligibility elsewhere.
What are some potential landing spots for Aguilar?
The most obvious potential option, which would be fascinating given the circumstances, is Tennessee. The Vols are still on the hunt for a third scholarship quarterback, and the options currently available in the portal are uninspiring. Aguilar would immediately be the most experienced and most productive starter in the portal upon entry.
Syracuse is still in the quarterback market and recently hosted former Georgia State starter Zach Gibson for a visit and will reportedly have Notre Dame transfer Steve Angeli on campus today. The Orange are trying to find a successor for Kyle McCord.
Tulane’s starter in 2024, Darian Mensah, transferred to Duke in the winter, and the Green Wave could potentially add a passer. They were thought to be a potential factor in the market for Iamaleava but quickly pivoted away from the former Tennessee starter.
