King Charles III and Queen Camilla have expressed their deep sorrow at the passing of Pope Francis, who died at age 88 on Easter Monday.
The monarchs had only recently visited the Vatican, holding what would be their final audience with the pontiff just 11 days prior to his death.

The King issued a moving statement shortly after the announcement, honoring the legacy and compassion of the Catholic leader, who served the Church and the world with unwavering devotion.
“My wife and I were most deeply saddened to learn of the death of Pope Francis,” the King wrote. “Our heavy hearts have been somewhat eased, however, to know that His Holiness was able to share an Easter Greeting with the Church and the world he served with such devotion throughout his life and ministry.”
Charles went on to reflect on Pope Francis’ lasting impact, praising his work in uniting people across faiths and ideologies.
“His Holiness will be remembered for his compassion, his concern for the unity of the Church and for his tireless commitment to the common causes of all people of faith, and to those of goodwill who work for the benefit of others,” the statement continued. “His belief that care for Creation is an existential expression of faith in God resounded with so many across the world. Through his work and care for both people and planet, he profoundly touched the lives of so many.”
A final, heartfelt meeting at the Vatican
Their Majesties had shared a private 20-minute audience with the Pope during their state visit to Italy earlier this month.
Despite the pontiff’s recent health challenges, including hospitalization for double pneumonia and chronic bronchitis, he personally requested the meeting-a gesture that made a lasting impression on the royal couple.
“The Queen and I remember with particular affection our meetings with His Holiness over the years and we were greatly moved to have been able to visit him earlier in the month,” the King said in his statement. “We send our most heartfelt condolences and profound sympathy to the Church he served with such resolve and to the countless people around the world who, inspired by his life, will be mourning the devastating loss of this faithful follower of Jesus Christ.”
A Palace official shared further insights, explaining how the audience came about unexpectedly, due to the Pope’s condition fluctuating in the days leading up to the visit.
“We didn’t know until the last minute that it would be possible,” said the senior Palace aide. “But when the Pope asked if he could see the King and Queen, Their Majesties were clearly very pleased; after all, they have known him over many years and with the rest of the world, have been praying for his recovery.”
The meeting was described as a particularly “significant and special moment”, made more poignant by the fact that it occurred just ahead of the couple’s 20th wedding anniversary. During the visit, the Pope personally congratulated the King and Queen on their milestone and presented them with gifts to mark the occasion.
