Even royalty isn’t immune to at-home beauty mishaps.
In the latest episode of her podcast Confessions of a Female Founder, Meghan Markle opened up about a memorable box dye fail during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, a moment that unexpectedly led to a lasting friendship.

Meghan Markle’s hair horror story
Speaking with hair colorist Kadi Lee, founder of Highbrow Hippie and a guest on the episode, the Duchess of Sussex shared the backstory of how their paths first crossed.
Living in California after relocating with Prince Harry and their children, Meghan attempted to color her hair at home, inspired by the picture-perfect results promised on the box.
“I thought, ‘I’m going to look just like she does on the box,'”Meghan recalled.
But reality didn’t quite match expectations.
“It was this very inky, almost Elvira-esque black hair,” she added, describing the unintended gothic hue that resulted.
The color catastrophe prompted her to reach out to celebrity stylist Serge Normant – the same stylist who did her hair for her 2018 royal wedding.
“And I texted Serge, and he said, ‘You need to see Kadi.’ And you came over. I mean, we were masked and all the things. It was such an interesting time, but I remember that day so well,”Meghan shared.
That initial appointment marked the beginning of a close relationship.
Meghan now refers to Lee as a trusted friend – and so do her children.
“I mean, our kids love Auntie Kadi,” she said.
“It’s my favorite when they run out to your car. It’s like, ‘Kadi!'”
The conversation also touched on Meghan’s college years, where she reflected on the lack of accessible hair tools.
“When I was at Northwestern and I moved into Kappa [Kappa Gamma]-our sorority there-I don’t even think they made plug-in flat irons at the time,” she said, describing how she used a stove-heated iron.
“And I remember most of the girls in the sorority who were not Black saying, ‘What’s that smell? Is hair burning?'”
Markle, now an investor in Highbrow Hippie, praised Lee’s approach to hair health, calling her product line “a perfect reflection” of her expertise.
“I am so proud to invest in [Kadi] as a friend and as a female founder,” she told InStyle.
As Meghan continues to build her brand empire, including the recent launch of her lifestyle venture As Ever, her latest podcast moment offers a rare, relatable glimpse into a not-so-glamorous chapter of lockdown life.
