Syndication: Detroit Free PressDetroit Tigers pitcher Reese Olson (45) throws against San Diego Padres during the first inning at Comerica Park in Detroit on Wednesday, April 23, 2025.

Reese Olson pitched 7 1/3 innings of shutout ball, Justyn-Henry Malloy supplied a homer and RBI double, and the host Detroit Tigers downed the San Diego Padres 6-0 on Wednesday afternoon.

Olson (3-1) limited San Diego to two Jose Iglesias singles while recording seven strikeouts.

Dillon Dingler blasted a two-run homer. Gleyber Torres also homered for the Tigers, while Riley Greene added two hits and an RBI. Detroit took the series 2-1.

San Diego starter Kyle Hart (2-2) gave up two runs and five hits in 4 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out six.

The Padres ran themselves out of a scoring chance in the first inning. Fernando Tatis Jr. reached on an error by second baseman Torres leading off the contest. He moved to second on an Olson wild pitch but was thrown out for the third out trying to steal third.

The Tigers scored one in the bottom of the inning but squandered a chance to open up a bigger lead. With one out, Torres blasted a 402-foot homer to left-center field. Detroit then loaded the bases on singles from Greene and Andy Ibanez and a walk to Spencer Torkelson. Hart responded by striking out Zach McKinstry and Dingler.

In the third, Iglesias led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice. He moved to third on a groundout but Olson retired Tatis on another grounder to snuff out that threat.

Malloy smashed a Hart slider over the left field wall with one out in the fifth for a 2-0 lead.

Detroit made it 4-0 in the seventh. Trey Sweeney had a one-out single before Malloy doubled to right, driving home Sweeney. One out later, Greene smacked an opposite-field single to bring home Malloy.

Iglesias’ second hit off Olson came after Oscar Gonzalez drew a one-out walk. Tommy Kahnle replaced Olson and retired the next two batters.

Dingler increased the Tigers’ advantage to six runs with his two-run shot in the eighth off Yuki Matsui, which followed a McKinstry single.

Amorim: I’m open to speaking with Mainoo if he wants January loan exit

Ruben Amorim says he is open to speaking to Kobbie Mainoo about his Manchester United future if the midfielder still wants to leave on loan in January. Mainoo, who requested a temporary switch in the summer, is yet to start a Premier League game this season, despite the United head coach saying he views the academy graduate "as a starter like the other players" after the 4-1 win at Wolves. Amorim's handling of Mainoo has infuriated club legends Paul Scholes, Rio Ferdinand and Nicky Butt who have all said the 20-year-old should leave United rather than waste his career waiting for opportunities. What has been said about Mainoo? Paul Scholes: "You would have to advise him to go. If he rang me and said 'I think Chelsea are in for me what do you think', I'd say 'all day long'." […]
