As the 2025 NFL Draft approaches, Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough has emerged as one of the most intriguing prospects, challenging the established hierarchy of top quarterbacks.
At 25 years old, Shough’s age has been a topic of discussion; however, his recent performances and experience have led many to reconsider his draft potential.
Shough’s collegiate journey has been marked by resilience and adaptability. After transferring from Oregon and Texas Tech, he found success at Louisville, culminating in a standout 2024 season where he threw for 3,195 yards, 23 touchdowns, and only six interceptions.
His completion rate stood at 62.7%, and he showcased his athleticism with a 4.64-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, the second-fastest among quarterbacks.
Rising draft stock amidst competition
While quarterbacks like Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders have garnered significant attention, Shough’s recent performances have caught the eye of analysts and NFL executives.
“There’s serious momentum building that QB Tyler Shough is going to be taken in the first round,” wrote one NFL Insider on X.
The Athletic’s Dianna Russini also reported, “The quarterback I have heard being discussed in NFL circles more than any other lately is Louisville’s Tyler Shough.”
ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. noted that Shough’s stock has risen following the NFL Combine, highlighting his strong arm and poise under pressure. Additionally, an anonymous NFL executive praised Shough’s maturity and adaptability, emphasizing his experience across multiple programs.
“He’s been in a lot of places, he’s handled adversity, he’s learned different systems, and he’s had to be around the most diverse group of people, going between all three schools… It’s just, you have to figure out if the floor and the ceiling are touching. And then, can you couple that with the durability?,” one executive stated as per Tom Pelissero.
The consensus among many analysts is that Shough has the potential to be selected in the first round of the draft. His blend of experience, physical attributes, and recent performances make him a compelling choice for teams seeking a quarterback ready to contribute immediately.
As the draft approaches, all eyes will be on Shough to see if he can continue his ascent and secure a prominent spot in the 2025 NFL Draft.
