Djokovic on Alcaraz’s ‘being a slave to tennis’: “It’s a bit of a harsh word but I understand why he said it”

Before making his debut at the Mutua Madrid Open, Novak Djokovic gave a very thoughtful press conference at the Caja Magica, addressing several topics such as the present and future of tennis, the high level that Carlos Alcaraz has reached at the age of 21 or ‘being a slave to tennis’(as the journalist who asked ‘Nole’ quotes) to which the Spaniard refers in his documentary. “To be the best in history, a slave you have to be,” he says in a moment of it in a chat with Juan Carlos Ferrero, who is the one who tells him these words.

The Serb was questioned about the documentary ‘A mi manera’ which was released on Netflix and is about Alcaraz’s life. “How does it feel to achieve what he has achieved in tennis?” they asked Nole after explaining Carlitos’ reflection. And the Serb… spoke.

“I understand that it’s a bit of a harsh word to describe the feeling of being trapped in the game, in a way, in the game of life or in the profession, in this sport. But I understand why he said it, because it’s an individual sport and it requires 100%, really 100% of the physical energy, but also mental and emotional energy of a tennis player, which is much more than just hitting a ball on the court,” said the former world No. 1.

“So it takes a lot of time out of your year, or years out of your life. It doesn’t matter, because in the end it’s your decision. Not everyone has a choice, of course, a lot of people suffer in other areas of life, and we know that, so I don’t want it to sound arrogant or pretentious. But, well, we’re lucky to be able to do what we do. You know, most of us love tennis, we love this sport, we fell in love with it as kids, and here we are playing at the highest level, speaking in front of a full press room, and of course that brings us a lot of positivity. And that rewards us enormously,” he continued.

“But, of course, it’s not easy. You know, you have a lot of challenges, and one of them is the length of the tennis season, which is the longest of any sport in the world. It starts in January and ends almost at the end of November. So, for me, it’s always been very long, especially in the last few years with some changes, and the two or almost two-week-long events. Now, essentially, we don’t have four Grand Slams, but maybe 12 Grand Slams, you know? If you think about it, because each Grand Slam lasts two weeks, and now you have 1000 events that also last almost two weeks. So it’s a lot, it’s a lot of time you spend traveling without seeing your family or being at home.”

“It depends on the person or the player, but of course it wears you out a lot. It gives you the opportunity to do your job, of course, and a profession, and to do your thing, or, how shall I put it?… to be grateful to do something you are passionate about and be successful at it. But at the same time, there is also the other side.So I understand why he said it, but maybe he used a slightly harsh word to describe it,” he concluded in the press room.

Jets 2025 NFL Draft takeaways: They went chalk — and that might not be a bad thing

Aaron Glenn’s goal at the outset of the offseason was to establish a brand, to set the tone. What’s that brand?“Tough, physical, violent, aggressive, resilient,” Glenn said. “If we continue to get guys like that, you’ll start to see the brand show up on the grass.”That thought process drove everything Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey did this offseason, in free agency and especially in the NFL Draft. They didn’t set out to make a splash — and they didn’t in free agency, outside of signing quarterback Justin Fields — but wanted to simply find the right people to fit what they want to do. For the last couple of years, the Jets had talent and big names. They made headlines, but it was a team that often faltered under pressure, struggling to handle adversity and sometimes failing to cultivate […]

Harry Kane criticises ‘crazy’ booking ruling him out of potential Bundesliga title-clincher

Harry Kane has criticised a “crazy” refereeing decision that will see him miss Bayern Munich’s game against RB Leipzig, when they could clinch the Bundesliga title.Kane was shown a yellow card in the 45th minute of Bayern’s 3-0 win over Mainz on Saturday. It was his fifth booking of the season, meaning that he will now serve a one-match suspension.AdvertisementWith Bayern 2-0 up in first half injury time, referee Bastian Dankert awarded a free kick for Mainz, which Kane delayed by not immediately releasing the ball. Dankert showed him a yellow card — which Kane described as a “crazy, crazy decision” — which potentially costs him the chance to be on the pitch when Bayern confirm their title at the Red Bull Arena next weekend.“Unfortunately, sometimes people come to the Allianz Arena and try to make a name for themselves,” […]

Seahawks 2025 NFL Draft takeaways: Wild card Jalen Milroe highlights offense-heavy class

In Mike Macdonald’s first season as head coach of the Seattle Seahawks, the team had a below-average scoring offense and missed the playoffs.Macdonald then fired his offensive coordinator and made significant changes to the offensive staff. Seattle traded its starting quarterback, released one of the best wide receivers in franchise history (Tyler Lockett) and traded DK Metcalf. The Seahawks also entered the draft with very serious needs along the interior offensive line.AdvertisementThis is important context because it helps explain Seattle’s 11-man haul in the 2025 NFL Draft. Nine of the picks were spent on offense, including the top selection, guard Grey Zabel. He’s the first guard general manager John Schneider has ever drafted in the first round. Zabel turned out to be one of three college tackles the Seahawks drafted to play guard in the NFL.Seattle also drafted two receivers […]

Soft? Not these Cavaliers, who destroyed Heat in Game 3 amid trash-talking battle

MIAMI — Let’s get this part out of the way:It was either unfortunate timing, or just not the best look, for Darius Garland to go in on Tyler Herro and then not play the next game with a toe sprain.Likewise, it was either unfortunate timing or not the best look for Herro, and the Miami Heat, to respond as forcefully with their words to Garland as they did and then play as poorly as they did Saturday.AdvertisementYou could, if you wanted, try to make a case that the Cleveland Cavaliers’ dominance in a 124-87 win over Miami in Game 3 was a result of Garland’s teammates having his back, picking him up when he was not out there to walk the walk. You could try that, and the Cavs would meet you with an “ehhhh.”“Maybe a little bit, but I feel […]

Rams 2025 NFL Draft takeaways: Roster confidence and aiming to win now are apparent

LOS ANGELES — This year’s L.A. Rams draft had all the feel of a team fine-tuning select areas in preparation to make a real run at a championship, without losing its substance afterward. The Rams’ six picks — including three trades up on Day 3 — are the fewest they have used since 2016. They also added a first-round pick in 2026 via Atlanta after trading out of the first round Thursday night.AdvertisementThis means two things are true: The Rams are confident about the backbone of their roster and assets in 2026 and beyond, but they’re going to try to win now.Their moves in free agency — from agreeing to continued terms with star quarterback Matthew Stafford to their extension of left tackle Alaric Jackson addition of free-agent nose tackle Poona Ford, receiver Davante Adams and center Coleman Shelton — all […]

2025 NFL Draft: Patriots’ Mr. Irrelevant pick is DB Kobee Minor, who played at Texas Tech, Indiana and Memphis

Mr. Irrelevant really was fairly irrelevant this year. The Patriots selected Kobee Minor, a defensive back who played at Texas Tech, Indiana and Memphis. The NFL Network desk seemed caught off guard by the pick. Analyst Daniel Jeremiah admitted during the NFL Network broadcast that he hadn't watched Minor, and the pick was a flier. Minor had just 38 tackles and no interceptions, but two sacks, in his final college season with Memphis. Before his last season, he had started just nine games in his college career.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe final pick was originally held by the Kansas City Chiefs, but they traded it to the Patriots. The Chiefs got the 228th overall pick for Nos. 251 and 257, which was the last pick of the draft. The family of Mr. Irrelevant founder Paul Salata announced the pick as a way to celebrate the […]
