Flau’jae Johnson announces future plans: LSU guard sets record clear on transfer portal

Flau’jae Johnson had a big decision to make – and after a season full of ups and downs, Tigers fans weren’t sure which way she would lean.

The LSU star declared for the WNBA Draft but didn’t immediately sign with an agent, keeping her college eligibility alive and fueling plenty of speculation. Would she bolt for the pros? Hit the transfer portal? Or run it back one more time with Kim Mulkey?

Kim Mulkey gives evil look to Flau’Jae Johnson and sparks debate over if she’s a sore loser

Turns out, Johnson’s heart is still in Baton Rouge.

According to Annie Costabile of Front Office Sports, the 5-foot-10 guard is staying put for her senior year – a huge win for a program ready to make another title run.

After averaging a career-best 18.6 points per game last season, Johnson brings back not just scoring, but the edge and toughness LSU built its championship culture around. She’s been part of the foundation ever since arriving on campus and winning SEC Freshman of the Year honors. With big goals still on the table, her return feels less like unfinished business and more like a full-on mission.

The bgger picture: Johnson’s return could shape the NCAA landscape

LSU isn’t the only program celebrating. In a wild offseason where more than 1,100 players hit the transfer portal, according to The Athletic, a player of Johnson’s caliber staying loyal is rare – and it sends a message. She’s betting that one more year under Mulkey’s demanding but proven system will sharpen her for the WNBA.

Johnson has steadily evolved her game, especially from deep. She shot over 38% from three on 3.8 attempts per game last year, per Her Hoop Stats. When paired with her aggressive driving ability, that growth makes her one of the most unpredictable and dangerous guards in the country.

Mulkey’s track record with players like Brittney Griner, DiJonai Carrington, and Angel Reese shows what’s possible. If Johnson keeps trending upward, she’s not just coming back for another college run – she’s building a case to be a top pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft.
