Barça has a prime opportunity to defeat its archenemy for the third time this season. The first two were convincing wins: 4-0 in October for La Liga play, then 5-2 in January for the Spanish Super Cup. Robert Lewandowski scored three times across those matches and Lamine Yamal had one goal in each. Critically, the veteran Lewandowski will be held out of this match with a hamstring injury, but there’s certainly enough top-line talent to compensate. Raphinha is second on the roster in both goals and assists, and Ferran Torres is third in La Liga for goals/90. Yamal is a breakout star at 17 years old.
Barcelona takes the pitch atop the league standings with five matches remaining and undefeated in domestic competition for the calendar year. This is its first time facing Real Madrid in a Copa final since 2014, when Gareth Bale’s stunner earned Real the trophy. Madrid also beat the Catalans in the 2011 final, with Cristiano Ronaldo netting the only goal of the match in added time. Barça had won the previous two final meetings in 1990 and 1983.
Real sits second in the league table with 72 points to Barcelona’s 76. Madrid will be without Eduardo Camavinga for the rest of the season: the 22-year-old midfielder endured an abductor tear in Wednesday’s win against Getafe. He was on the pitch in relief of David Alaba, who was hobbled in the first half. Madrid has also been without notables Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao.
