A controversial triple play highlighted a wild walk-off win for the Washington Nationals over the New York Mets on Friday night. Washington’s 5-4 victory, which included two runs in the bottom of the ninth, halted New York’s winning streak at seven.
The Nationals turned their first triple play in three seasons in Friday’s fourth inning. With runners on first and second, Jesse Winker hit a hard liner toward first base. The umpires ruled that Nathaniel Lowe snared the ball in the air, which meant Winker was out. Lowe threw to CJ Abrams at second base to double off Brandon Nimmo, and Abrams returned the throw to Lowe to triple off Mark Vientos. Score it 3-6-3.
Replay, however, showed that the ball had skipped into Lowe’s glove. Whether a line drive is caught on the infield is not reviewable. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza argued with crew chief and first-base umpire Alfonso Marquez to no avail.

The Cubs turned a similar triple play back in 2020.
It was the Nationals’ first triple play at home, and the first triple play the Mets have hit into since 2010.
