22letá rodačka z Kyjeva měla do zápasu parádní nástup. Hned při první příležitosti sebrala soupeřce servis. Za stavu 2:0 šla na podání znovu ona, ale o jeho udržení musela tvrdě bojovat. Proměnit výhodu v zisk gamu jí pomohl neuvěřitelný kiks při servisu, kdy míček trefila tak zvláštně, že s velkou rotací dopadl za síť a uskočil do strany.
Zkoprnělá Ruska na nečekaný moment vůbec nezareagovala. A ani servírující Ukrajinka moc nechápala, co se vlastně stalo, a pro jistotu se pohledem na rozhodčí ujišťovala, že jde opravdu o eso. Kosťuková se zdviženýma rukama se následně soupeřce omlouvala.
Set nakonec vyhrála jasně 6:0, jenže duel se nakonec vyvinul ve velké drama, v němž 24. nasazená tenistka z Ukrajiny slavila výhru až po dvou hodinách a 37 minutách.
Kosťukové už se letos podařilo jedno kuriózní eso proti ruské tenistce, a to v Miami proti Anně Blinkovové. Zápas proti ní ukončila po necelé hodině (6:2, 6:1) esem z podání spodem. Ani Blinkovová na počin Ukrajinky vůbec nezareagovala.
Kosťuková se měla v pondělí utkat o čtvrtfinále s další Ruskou Anastasií Potapovovou, ale kvůli celostátnímu výpadku proudu ve Španělsku se její duel odkládá.
