Princess Diana‘s legacy as a beloved figure who connected deeply with marginalized communities has taken on new life with the revelation of one of her most daring escapades.
According to Edward White‘s forthcoming biography, Dianaworld: An Obsession, the Princess of Wales once disguised herself in male drag to sneak into one of London’s most famous gay bars with Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.

In an excerpt obtained by People, White describes Diana‘s covert adventure as a significant example of how “furtive nocturnal activity plays an important role as moments when she secretly revealed hidden aspects of her true self.”
A hilarious and heartwarming glimpse into Diana’s rebellious spirit
The event took place in the late 1980s and involved several of Diana‘s celebrity friends, including comedy actress Cleo Rocos and late radio DJ Kenny Everett – the first to play “Bohemian Rhapsody” on air.
According to Rocos, Diana was insistent on joining the group for a night out at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, despite Everett‘s warning that it was “not for you … full of hairy gay men.”
Determined, Diana donned a “camouflage army jacket, hair tucked up into a leather cap and dark aviator sunglasses,” according to White.
Rocos recalled that after inspecting her in the dim light, they decided “the most famous icon of the modern world might just …JUST, pass for a rather eccentrically dressed gay male model.”
The plan, incredibly, seemed to work.
“It was fabulously outrageous and so bizarrely exciting …no one, absolutely no one, recognized Diana,” Rocos said.
The group stayed for one drink before Diana quietly returned to Kensington Palace, later sending back Everett‘s clothes with a note expressing how much she had enjoyed herself.
White points out that Diana‘s night in drag has become symbolic of her relationship with the LGBTQ+ community and her broader search for acceptance outside the confines of royal life.
