SPORT BILD: Mister Johnson, Sie sagen, dass die Leichtathletik seit Langem kaputt sei. Wie wollen Sie das mit Ihrer neuen Grand-Slam-Track-Serie ändern?

Michael Johnson: Wenn man den Fans zuhört, sagen die immer eins: Sie wollen die besten Athleten häufiger im Wettkampf gegeneinander sehen. Sie wollen die Rivalitäten sehen und nicht immer vier Jahre lang auf Duelle bei Olympia warten. Die Fans sind frustriert! Bei unserer Serie haben wir die schnellsten Athleten unter Vertrag genommen, und sie haben sich dazu verpflichtet, gegen ihre Rivalen anzutreten. Diese Duelle brauchen wir heute wieder häufiger.

Bisher gingen sich die Top-Stars meist aus dem Weg, um keine Niederlagen einstecken zu können – und nur wenige bekamen Geld.

Die Athleten wollen eigentlich auch diese Duelle, aber es gab nicht genug Anreize. Wenn sie schon diesen Wettkampf eingehen, sollten sie auch dafür entlohnt werden. Wir bieten jetzt das Geld und die Rennen der Besten.

[–>Früher kannte jeder Sportfan 100-Meter-Weltrekordler Usain Bolt, Carl Lewis oder auch Sie. Jetzt sind die meisten Leichtathleten in der Masse unbekannt.

Wir kennen diese Probleme, die unseren Sport ausbremsen und wollen mithelfen, dass unsere Sportart wieder ihr Potenzial ausschöpft. Ich bin davon überzeugt, dass unsere Serie so etwas wie die Formel 1 oder die UFC der Leichtathletik sein kann. Die haben ihre Marke über Jahre aufgebaut. Die UFC benötigte 15 Jahre, bei uns geht es hoffentlich schneller.

Viele Leichtathleten verdienen sehr wenig im Vergleich zu Sportlern im US-Sport, Tennis oder Golf.

Die Leichtathleten sind frustriert, weil sie sehen, wie Athleten in anderen Sportarten die gesamte Aufmerksamkeit und die Auszeichnungen bekommen. Leichtathleten widmen ihr Leben dem Sport, wollen bei Olympia Medaillen gewinnen. Die Realität ist aber, dass das nur die wenigsten schaffen können, weil es nur wenige Medaillen gibt. Die meisten investieren so viel, doch können nicht von der Leichtathletik leben und die Rechnungen des Alltags bezahlen.

Was ist das Problem?

Der Grund dafür ist ein Mangel an großen jährlichen Events. Im Tennis gibt es die vier Grand Slams und noch weitere große Turniere. Im Golf gibt es die Majors. Da schaut die Sportwelt hin, und dort treten die Besten der Sportarten gegeneinander an. In der Leichtathletik gibt es nur alle vier Jahre Olympia und alle zwei Jahre eine WM. Das war die Motivation für mich, diese Serie aufzubauen, weil ich den Athleten diese zusätzliche Präsenz geben wollte. Bei uns werden die Athleten fair bezahlt und bekommen die Anerkennung, die sie verdienen. Das gibt mir ein gutes Gefühl.

Jetzt geht es um insgesamt 12,6 Millionen Dollar Preisgeld. Wie haben Sie die Starter ausgewählt?

Es gibt ein Renn-Komitee, dem ich vorsitze. Damit haben wir zum Beispiel die Schnellsten von Olympia 2024 in Paris angesprochen. So haben wir das gesamte Podium von den 1500 Metern dabei. Die treten jetzt viermal bei uns gegeneinander an. Außerdem laufen sie auch noch über die 800 Meter gegen die Besten dort. Das ist der besondere Dreh: Jeder muss auf zwei Distanzen in den Disziplingruppen antreten. Dadurch entsteht mehr Ungewissheit und Spannung, wer sich durchsetzt. Mehr Drama! Es gibt 48 feste Athleten und 48 Herausforderer, die zu bestimmten Rennen eingeladen werden.

Ihre Rennserie ist ein Sport-Start-up mit einer Investition von 30 Millionen Dollar. Wie groß sind Ihre Sorgen, dass es schiefgeht?

Natürlich ist es einfacher, das Ganze nicht zu machen. Es gibt immer ein Risiko. Wir haben tolle Botschafter, TV-Partner und Athleten, die alle voll hinter dieser Liga stehen. Wir schauen nicht zurück auf Modelle, die scheiterten, lernen aber aus den Fehlern dieser oder auch von Ligen, die erfolgreich waren. Wir schauen, wie wir die Stolperfallen umgehen. Wir wollen die beste Sportart der Welt in den Fokus stellen und die besten Wettkämpfe bieten. Wir sind aufgestellt, um etwas Langfristiges aufzubauen. Erfolg braucht Zeit, die haben wir.

Planen Sie eine Expansion auf andere Kontinente, wie zum Beispiel nach Europa?

Wir wollen auf jeden Fall expandieren. Diese Saison liegt der Fokus auf den vier Städten (Kingston, Miami, Philadelphia und Los Angeles; d. Red.). Danach prüfen wir, ob, wann und wohin wir expandieren. Mehrere Städte rund um den Globus haben bereits ihr Interesse bekundet.

100 000 Dollar pro Sieg

Die Termine von Grand Slam Track sind in Miami (2. bis 4. Mai), Philadelphia (30. Mai bis 1. Juni) und Los Angeles (27. bis 29. Juni). Es gibt sechs Disziplin-Kategorien, in denen je zwei Rennen bestritten werden. Zum Beispiel: Kurzsprint (100 und 200 Meter) oder Mitteldistanz (800 und 1500 Meter). Für die Platzierungen gibt es Punkte. Wer am meisten sammelt, kassiert pro Slam 100 000 Dollar. Am Start sind u. a. 400-Meter-Hürden-Weltrekordlerin Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone (25), 1500-Meter-Olympiasieger Cole Hocker (23) und Dreifach-Olympiasiegerin Gabrielle Thomas (28).
