Serena Williams’ former coach has spoken out about Tennis’ battle with doping

The baseball cards that make us happy: Childhood favorites and mementos of loved ones

For many of us, it’s impossible to think about baseball without also thinking about baseball cards. Those little pieces of cardboard serve as tangible reminders of people, moments and emotions that get wrapped up in the game we love. With the new MLB season now in full swing, we asked The Athletic’s writers and editors a question: AdvertisementWhat baseball card makes you happy? Here are their answers…My favorite player, Steve Carlton, didn’t seem to smile very much. His Hall of Fame plaque starts with “Extremely focused competitor…”, and really, that’s all we should want. But we still root for the people, not just the players, and so my favorite card is Carlton’s from Topps in 1982. That was the year I fell in love with baseball, at age seven, and Carlton was the best pitcher in the sport. He’s pictured at […]

Seahawks’ Mike Macdonald talks Geno Smith, DK Metcalf trades, explains why Sam Darnold’s a good fit in Seattle

Getty Images It's been an offseason of turnover for the Seattle Seahawks. Seattle hoped to sign quarterback Geno Smith to an extension, but was forced to quickly adjust its game plan when those talks stalled. "You have the best intention to try to make something happen," Seahawks head coach Macdonald said Tuesday, via the Seattle Times. "But I think of it like this computer process in the back of your head like, 'OK, well is this still in line with what's going to be best for us right now and long term?' And when it became obvious that, 'Hey, this is not going to happen,' well you don't want to be caught without a chair at the […]

NFL announces use of virtual measurement technology for first downs

The first down measurement will be undergoing massive changes during the 2025 season. The NFL announced Tuesday a partnership with Sony’s Hawk-Eye technology as the new primary method for measuring the line to gain. The NFL began experimenting with digital measurement of lines to gain during last preseason; however, more testing and modifications to the system were required before league officials felt comfortable relying primarily on that technology.AdvertisementThe technology consists of six 8K cameras used for optical tracking of the ball’s position.
