The NFL quarterback carousel is spinning, and Aaron Rodgers‘ next move could determine the fates of Kirk Cousins and Derek Carr, according to a recent insider report. As the 2025 season looms, Rodgers, the former Packers and Jets’ four-time MVP, faces uncertainty at 41, with his $23.5 million cap hit and injury-plagued 2024 campaign raising questions about his tenure.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport highlighted on NFL Network how Rodgers’ decision-whether to stay, retire, or be traded-creates a ripple effect for Cousins of the Atlanta Falcons and Carr of the New Orleans Saints.
Rodgers’ 2024 season with the New York Jets showcased resilience at 41, post-Achilles injury. He played all 17 games, throwing for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions (90.5 passer rating). Highlights included a 300-yard game against Miami and his 500th career touchdown pass in the finale, a 32-20 win. Despite injuries (hamstring, knee, ankle) and a chaotic Jets season (5-12 record, midseason firings of coach and GM), Rodgers showed flashes of brilliance but struggled with consistency.
Cousins, 36, signed a four-year, $180 million deal with Atlanta in 2024 but struggled post-Week 10 knee injury, posting 3,200 yards and 18 touchdowns. The Falcons’ 7-10 record and rookie Michael Penix Jr.’s presence fuel speculation about Cousins’ future.
Rodgers’ choice could upend Carr, Cousins’ paths
Carr, 34, faces similar pressure in New Orleans. His $150 million contract hasn’t delivered, with the Saints at 6-11 in 2024 and Carr throwing for 3,600 yards but only 16 touchdowns. Rapoport noted, “If Rodgers is available, teams like the Saints might pursue him, pushing Carr out.”
Alternatively, if Rodgers retires, the Jets could target Cousins or Carr to bridge the gap to a younger QB. Both veterans are seen as stopgaps, with Cousins’ $45 million cap hit and Carr’s $50 million looming large.
Right now, the most straightforward outcomes seem the most likely across the board. Aaron Rodgers will probably give in and sign with the Steelers. Kirk Cousins either sticks around as Atlanta’s backup or gets cut and ends up waiting for an injury call from someone’s couch. As for the Saints, they’ll ride with Derek Carr-at least for now-before eventually handing things over to 2025 third-rounder Tyler Shough.
