After limping through a 7-10 season that crumbled under the weight of expectations, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made his boldest move in years by showing Mike McCarthy the door and handed the keys to Brian Schottenheimer.
Schottenheimer, best known as a long-time NFL play-caller and motivator, wasn’t supposed to be the face of the Cowboys‘ future. But here he is, galvanizing a locker room with more questions than answers and turning the first practices of the 2025 season into something that actually resembles belief.
Rookie running back Phil Mafah captured the moment perfectly after Dallas’ first official practice under the new regime.
“The coaches have so much energy on this staff,” Mafah said. “It allows the players to be themselves…We just feed off each other.”
The culture shock
The scene at Cowboys headquarters looked and felt different. Music blared through speakers. Assistants brought the energy of sideline hype men. Helmets clanged, pads popped, and the Cowboys didn’t feel like they were carrying the weight of their last playoff disappointment. They looked like a team finally having fun again.
This is the culture shock Jerry Jones has been angling for. The Cowboys’ collapse last season, punctuated by listless losses and a locker room devoid of spark, had become a pattern under McCarthy‘s watch.
“I have great respect for Mike,” Jones said following McCarthy’s dismissal.
Enter Schottenheimer, whose style is less boardroom and more boots-on-the-ground. He’s not drawing lines between players and coaches-he’s erasing them. Just ask tight end Jake Ferguson.
“I don’t think I’ve ever had a head coach come down [to my level],” Ferguson said. “Every time I’m in the coach, I’ll be talking to myself.”
Ferguson, now coming off a breakout season as a Pro Bowl tight end, says he’s “happy as H-E-double hockey sticks” with the new staff. There’s a lightness to his voice-and a seriousness in his message. For a team that’s been long on hype and short on results, this newfound connection could be everything.
