Alijah Arenas trapped for 12 minutes in fiery crash before being rescued

Alijah Arenas, the promising basketball recruit and son of former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas, survived a harrowing car crash that could have ended much differently. On April 24, the 18-year-old was involved in a serious accident in a Tesla Cybertruck that erupted in flames, leaving him trapped inside the vehicle for up to 12 minutes. According to his father, it was only thanks to the bravery of nearby GoodSamaritans that Alijah made it out alive.

Gilbert detailed the frightening experience during an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, where he recalled receiving the shocking news. His first thoughts were the worst: burns, broken bones, life-changing injuries. But against the odds, Alijah emerged without any broken limbs or severe external wounds.

Horrifying video of Alijah Arenas car crash has emerged

Smoke inhalation led to a medically induced coma

Although Alijah escaped the crash physically intact, the intense smoke he inhaled inside the car caused serious internal complications. Gilbert explained that his son had to be sedated and placed into a medically induced coma after he began “going crazy” while doctors worked to clear his lungs.

The UCLA Health team stabilized him, and in typical Arenas fashion, Alijah woke up cracking jokes. His first words? A message for USC basketball head coach Eric Musselman: “Tell coach I’m sorry.”

Back on track for a promising future

Despite the trauma, Gilbert says Alijah is recovering well and continues to move forward with his basketball journey. The plan for college and the future remains unchanged. “He’s doing very well,” Gilbert shared, reassuring fans and scouts alike. “Fully recovering.”

The Arenas family is choosing to see the moment as a blessing rather than a tragedy. Gilbert credits “angels watching over him” that morning, pointing to the fact that any delay in the rescue might have had a far more tragic ending.

As for Alijah, the message is clear, he’s still focused, still motivated, and more than ready to “fight on.”
