Wirtz-Alternative!

Ashton Jeanty ‘ready to play that Raider brand of football’ as rookie minicamp kicks off

Five minutes was all it took.Back in May 2021, Ashton Jeanty was a high school junior slot receiver with more catches than carries to his name. Despite a lack of experience running the ball, he had barely started his recruiting workout at Boise State before then-head coach Andy Avalos offered him a scholarship to play running back.Advertisement“That was something I’ll always remember from being recruited — doing that workout,” Jeanty told The Athletic over the phone Tuesday. “They were kind of like, ‘Take it easy,’ but I was like, ‘Tch, man, come on, let’s go. This is what I do.’ Obviously, I killed the drills, so they had nothing more to see.”Jeanty committed to Boise State that September and became a superstar across the next three seasons. The Las Vegas Raiders became so enamored with his talent that they drafted […]

Does Christian Pulisic need a break from the USMNT this summer?

It is the annual cause of number-crunching and hand-wringing at clubs across the world. Connor Brown bringing ‘big-time fire’ at right time for Oilers in NHL playoffs

LAS VEGAS — There’s something about this time of year that brings out the best version of Connor Brown. He sure feels that.“I grew up on championship teams my whole life,” Brown said, referring to his minor hockey days with the Toronto Marlboros, which were coached by his dad, Dan. “This is what hockey’s always been about.Advertisement“I’ve always loved to compete and trying to win. There’s something about letting it all out in the big moments and seeing where the chips fall.”That’s been evident yet again over the past couple of weeks.Brown followed up what Connor McDavid thought was his best game as an Oiler in the Round 1 series clincher against the Los Angeles Kings with an effort that wasn’t far off from that in a 4-2 win over the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday.“Brownie is such a smart […]

Is home-court advantage still a factor in the NBA playoffs? Recent history says no

All season long, NBA teams compete to give themselves the best position in the playoffs. They grind over 82 games in the regular season to get the best record they can, which, if they are good enough, will then give them home-court advantage for a series, or two, or the whole postseason. It is an enticing incentive for teams that should make the struggle worth it, if for no other reason than getting the all-import, series-deciding Game 7 at home in front of the home fans.AdvertisementBut what if home-court advantage is losing its luster? It was a shock when the Cleveland Cavaliers lost Game 1 at home to the Indiana Pacers. It was a surprise when the Boston Celtics lost to the New York Knicks a day later. Then the Oklahoma City Thunder blew their series opener to the Nuggets. When […]

Always the perfectionist, Mookie Betts is focused on improving his bat speed

Talking to Mookie Betts, I almost wanted to pull an Allen Iverson.“Bat speed? You’re worried about bat speed?”An eight-time All-Star, seven-time Silver Slugger and three-time World Series champion is about the last player you would expect to fret, especially when he is still an elite performer. In April, The Athletic grouped Betts with five others in Tier 1 on its list of the top 100 position players in baseball. ESPN ranked Betts third among all players, MLB Network fifth.AdvertisementStill, Betts worries about everything, freely acknowledging he puts too much pressure on himself. And, to a degree, his concern with bat speed is warranted. It is one of the rare weaknesses in his game.Betts, in an interview Friday, attributed a recent 13-game stretch in which he batted .176 to bad habits he created returning from an illness in March that caused him […]

Broncos’ Caleb Lohner follows Jimmy Graham’s hoops-to-tight end path to Sean Payton

Caleb Lohner was about to realize a lifelong dream when the seed of an entirely different vision was planted. In 2019, Lohner was visiting the campus of the University of Utah, where the 6-foot-7, 245-pound teenager with a 40-inch vertical leap had just committed to play basketball as a top-100 national recruit. As part of the visit, Lohner was given a tour of the school’s football facility, where the team was warming up for a practice. It was there that Lohner met Freddie Whittingham, the tight ends coach who had grown up in the same Provo, Utah, neighborhood as Lohner’s father, Matt.Advertisement“They brought him out on the field and I said, ‘Hey, I know your dad and your grandpa very well,’ ” Whittingham said in a recent phone conversation. “I said, ‘Are you going to play basketball here?’ He says, ‘Yeah.’ I […]
