Mexico has decided to sue Google over the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in its Maps application, something that was reportedly prompted by Donald Trump. Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum explained this on Friday: “The lawsuit has already been filed”.
In fact, the name change arises not only from a proposal by the US president, but a federal law has been formulated through an executive order signed by Trump.

Last January, the Mexican company already threatened Google with the lawsuit if it did not remove the name. “All we want is for the decree issued by the US government to be complied with,” since this decree states that the Gulf of America will only be seen on the platform when the server used is from the United States.

“The US government only calls the Gulf of America the part of its continental shelf, not the whole Gulf, because it would not have the authority to name the whole Gulf,” he argued.
“We’re going to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring that covers a lot of territory, the Gulf of America. What a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate. It’s appropriate,” were the words of the American at the time.
Trump proposes that the Persian Gulf be called the Arabian Gulf
But this is not the only change sponsored by Trump, as he has also meddled with the Persian Gulf, wanting to call it the Arabian Gulf. This has not gone down well in the region, and this week Iran’s foreign minister spoke out about it:
“I am sure that Donald Trump knows that the name Persian Gulf is centuries old, is recognized by all cartographers and international bodies, and was even used by all the leaders of the region in their official communications as recently as the 1960s.”
