Merlin Polzin (34) schrieb an diesem Samstag Geschichte. Mit dem 6:1 gegen Ulm ist der Hamburger SV im siebten Anlauf endlich in die Bundesliga aufgestiegen. Der Trainer hat das geschafft, was seinen sechs Vorgängern nicht gelang. SPORT BILD erklärt, was Polzin besser macht als Christian Titz (54), Hannes Wolf (44), Dieter Hecking (60), Daniel Thioune (50), Tim Walter (49) und Steffen Baumgart (53).

Detailtiefe

Auf einer Taktik-Tafel steht: „Jede Sekunde zählt.“ Damit sensibilisiert Polzin seine Spieler vor jedem Training, immer konzentriert zu sein. Denn im Spiel hätten die Profis auch keine Zeit für Verschnaufpausen. „Auch die Detailtiefe der Mannschafts-Analysen ist beeindruckend“, sagt Sportvorstand Stefan Kuntz (62). Das unterscheidet Polzin vor allem von Hecking und auch ein wenig von Baumgart. Aber: Er überfrachtet seine Spieler nicht mit Informationen, die Analysen dauern nicht länger als 15 bis 20 Minuten. Unter Walter gingen sie zum Teil über 30, 40 Minuten.

Dazu bindet Polzin seine Assistenten Loïc Favé (32) und Richard Krohn (29) mit ein. So nutzte Favé seinen guten Draht zu Fabian Hürzeler (32), mit dem er beim FC St. Pauli arbeitete, um von ihm zu wissen: Was kann im Aufstiegskampf noch helfen? Der heutige Brighton-Coach Hürzeler führte den Stadtrivalen 2024 in die 1. Liga.

Teamführung

Der Baumgart-Nachfolger trat Ende 2024 mit dem Motto an: „Die Gemeinschaft stärken.“ Was Polzin gelang, schaffte insbesondere Thioune in 2020/21 nicht. „Die Beziehung zwischen Trainer und Spielern hat immer mehr gewackelt“, erklärte Ex-Boss Jonas Boldt (43) das vorzeitige Thioune-Aus. So kam es zu einem heftigen Kabinen-Zoff zwischen dem heutigen Düsseldorf-Coach und dem damaligen Stürmer Bobby Wood (32). Auch unter Walter war das Verhältnis zwischen Mannschaft und Trainer am Ende nicht mehr optimal. Zu schroff war sein Ton. Gewöhnungsbedürftig für einige Profis war auch Baumgarts zu lauter Umgangston.

Polzin dagegen ist kein Lautsprecher. Das kommt gut an. Wie auch, dass er für Klarheit sorgt, wenn es um Aufstellungsfragen geht. Einen Tag vor dem Schalke-Spiel (2:2) erklärte er dem gesetzten Davie Selke (30) im Detail, warum er aus taktischen Gründen nicht von Anfang an spielen wird. Der Angreifer akzeptierte es.

[–>Polzin hat zudem an Profil gewonnen, weil er keine Rücksicht auf Namen nimmt wie etwa Titz, Wolf, Thioune oder Walter. Der formschwache Kapitän Sebastian Schonlau (30) musste auf die Bank. Moritz Heyer (30/Düsseldorf) und Levin Öztunali (29) sortierte er Ende 2024 aus, um durch unzufriedene Spieler den Teamgeist nicht zu gefährden.

System

„Wir wollen eine Identität auf den Platz bringen.“ So formulierte Polzin seinen Plan mit Kombinations-Fußball. Keiner der Vorgänger hatte einen besseren Punkteschnitt. Polzin lässt ein offensives, aber strukturiertes 4-3-3-System spielen. Mitunter ändert er aber auch seinen Matchplan. Um die Mini-Krise – nur ein Punkt aus drei Spielen (Braunschweig, Schalke, KSC) – zu stoppen, agierte der verunsicherte HSV in Darmstadt abwartend und mit langen ­Bällen. Das sorgte für Stabilität, Sicherheit, Selbstvertrauen – und einen 4:0-Erfolg.

Vorgänger Baumgart baute auf die Defensive, ließ mit Dreierkette, fünf Mittelfeldspielern sowie zwei Angreifern agieren und nahm somit Außenbahnspieler Jean-Luc Dompé (29) dessen Stärken, weil der Franzose zu viel nach hinten arbeiten musste. Unter Polzin agiert Dompé viel offensiver. Ergebnis: 15 seiner 19 Scorerpunkte machte er unter ihm.

Walters Spielweise war oft vogelwild. Der Vorwurf: keinen Plan B gegen Teams zu haben, die dessen Strategie durchschauten.

Titz wurde ebenfalls vorgeworfen, zu viel Harakiri-Fußball spielen zu lassen. Ein 0:5 gegen Regensburg im September 2018 war der Anfang vom Ende für ihn.

Nachfolger Wolf schaffte es nicht, eine Aufstiegs-Mentalität einzuimpfen. Vor dem drittletzten Spiel der Serie 2018/19 gegen Ingolstadt hatten einige Profis bereits auf der Busfahrt in den Volkspark große Zweifel. Es folgte ein 0:3, dann ein 1:4 in Paderborn – Aufstieg futsch!

Wie auch unter Hecking eine Saison später. Der ließ zum Schluss Angsthasen- statt Attacke-­Fußball spielen. Ergebnis: 1:5 zu Hause gegen Sandhausen – Relegationsplatz verspielt.
