After putting three players on the injured list this week, the Cincinnati Reds traded for veteran infielder/outfielder Connor Joe from the San Diego Padres in exchange for a minor-league pitcher and cash considerations.
To make room for Joe on the 40-man roster, the Reds moved infielder/outfielder Tyler Callihan to the 60-day IL.

Callihan broke his left forearm in Monday’s loss to the Braves and was put on the IL the next day. On Wednesday, the team placed third baseman Noelvi Marte on the IL with a strained left oblique. Friday, right-hander Hunter Greene went on the IL with a right groin strain. Outfielder Jake Fraley hasn’t played since Tuesday night with left calf tenderness. Fraley was originally in the lineup for Friday’s series opener in Houston but was scratched before the start of the game.
Infielder Jeimer Candelario (lumbar spine strain) was put on the IL on April 30. First baseman Christian Encarnacion-Strand (low back inflammation) has been on the IL since April 17.
Joe, 32, has spent most of this season with the Padres’ Triple-A affiliate in El Paso, Texas. With the Chihuahuas, Joe hit .267/.405/.350 (16-for-60) in 16 games. He appeared in seven games for the Padres this season.
Joe spent the previous two seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Last season, he hit .228/.320/.368 with nine home runs.
Joe was in spring training with the Reds in 2019 as a Rule 5 pick, but he didn’t make the team and was traded to the San Francisco Giants. After one game with the Giants, he was returned to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Joe missed the entire 2020 season with testicular cancer.
He has also played for the Dodgers and Rockies. He is a career .241 hitter with 35 home runs.
Though the Reds tried to convert Joe to a catcher, he’s played first base and both corner-outfield spots in the big leagues. He started one game this year in center field for the Padres.
The Reds sent right-hander Andrew Moore to the Padres. Moore, 25, has appeared in six games for Double-A Chattanooga this year and has a 4.15 ERA. He has 12 strikeouts and eight walks in 8 2/3 innings.
Moore was one of the four players the Reds acquired from the Seattle Mariners for pitcher Luis Castillo at the trade deadline in 2022.
