However, joy has returned to the Dallas franchise after the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery. In a surprising – and even controversial – turn of events, the Mavericks now have the opportunity to select Cooper Flagg, the Duke star who has amazed the basketball world and is being compared to legends like Michael Jordan and LeBron James.

It’s well known that NFL superstar and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is a huge Mavericks fan. He wasted no time in taking to social media to react after it was revealed that Dallas is in position to draft NCAA sensation Cooper Flagg.
The news triggered an emotional outburst from Mahomes, who posted on X: “OMGGGGG!! Let’s goooo!!!” Born in Texas and an NFL legend, Mahomes has long been a passionate supporter of the Mavericks.
This moment helps heal one of Mahomes’ biggest wounds as a fan – Doncic’s departure. At the time, he expressed his heartbreak, saying:
“It definitely hurts more than anything knowing how hard Luka has worked, the time he put into Dallas, into the city, and everything he’s done for it. That’s what hurt the most.”
Now, Mahomes will get to root for a player with massive potential on his team, the Mavericks. In his most recent season with Duke, Cooper Flagg won both ACC Rookie of the Year and ACC Player of the Year.
