It’s getting harder to find a Formula One track that hasn’t been won by Oscar Piastri or Lando Norris. For now, we can count Imola in that category, though the two McLaren drivers are the top favorites entering the race weekend in Italy. Max Verstappen has claimed the last three races here, while Lewis Hamilton won the first race under the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix name back in 2020.
Practices and qualifiers run Friday through Saturday, with the GP itself set for Sunday.

Perched atop the F1 table is the Australian Piastri, who has won four of the last five GPs. His only finishes outside the No. 1 spot this year were at Japan (won by Verstappen) and Albert Park Circuit (won by Norris). Piastri came in fourth at Imola last year.
Trailing Piastri is fellow McLaren teammate Norris, who has the Australian victory plus three second-place finishes. The British driver was runner-up last time out at Miami, and claimed an additional eight points with a dominant sprint race victory.

Verstappen is Imola’s recent standard-bearer, having won with Red Bull in 2021, 2022 and 2024 (the 2023 event was cancelled due to the Emilia-Romagna floods). The Dutch driver hits Sunday with two fourth-place finishes (China, Miami) and a sixth-place stumble in Bahrain.

Alex Kalinauckas on Verstappen versus McLaren
“At any point, a full submarine might emerge to properly challenge McLaren’s mastery of these 2025 seas. But its domination has already been raked by the torpedoes from another threat. Verstappen once again showed his class. His Japanese Grand Prix victory is the main blemish on McLaren’s season so far and Verstappen might’ve won again in Saudi Arabia, but for a rare Red Bull poor start and Piastri (legally) outfoxing him in their first corner skirmish.
F1 is much more interesting for its tales and tribulations, as Red Bull prepares to celebrate 400 grand prix starts at Imola this weekend. Some don’t like Verstappen’s racing tactics, even though they thrill others — but his immense skill is making the 2025 F1 title campaign much more interesting than it might otherwise be.”
Madeline Coleman on F1’s 75th anniversary
“The 2025 season is proving one of the closest in terms of car performance in recent years, and it is the last campaign of the current set of regulations before new engines and 100 percent sustainable fuel are introduced in 2026. It has been chock-full of action, with McLaren holding a strong lead in both championships, three cars being disqualified in one race weekend, two shocking driver swaps, and a team principal resigning just six races in.”
