Philadelphia Eagles rookie quarterback Kyle McCord might have a future as Jalen Hurts‘ long-term backup, but that transition is unlikely to happen in 2025. According to ESPN, McCord will start his NFL journey by competing with Dorian Thompson-Robinson for the third emergency quarterback spot, while Tanner McKee is expected to serve as Hurts’ primary backup.
McCord, a 6-foot-3, 218-pound quarterback, was drafted in the sixth round (No. 181 overall) out of Syracuse, where he set an ACC single-season record with 4,779 passing yards in 2024. Before transferring to Syracuse, McCord was Ohio State’s starter in 2023, earning All-Big Ten honors. His ability to distribute the ball effectively made him one of college football’s top passers, and the Eagles hope he will develop into a reliable presence in their quarterback room.

This marks the second time in three years that the Eagles have selected a quarterback in the sixth round, previously drafting McKee in 2023. McKee has impressed enough to earn the No. 2 role behind Hurts, but his future beyond 2025 remains uncertain, as he could command a contract the Eagles won’t be able to match in free agency. If McCord develops quickly, he could either step into McKee’s role or become a trade asset for another team.
