The WNBA star, who spent most of 2022 detained in a Russian prison, is not only preparing to suit up for a new team but also redefining her public image with grace and resilience.
Griner was arrested at a Moscow airport in early 2022 after Russian authorities claimed she was carrying cannabis oil. She was eventually released in December as part of a high-profile prisoner exchange between the United States and Russia, which saw convicted arms dealer Viktor Bout returned to Russian custody.
Her case captured international attention and ignited conversations about diplomacy, athlete advocacy, and criminal justice abroad.

“I’m just grateful,” she said in past interviews when asked about her changed perspective.
That gratitude now fuels her return to the WNBA and a fresh start with a new team, marking the first time in her professional career that she will not be suiting up for the Phoenix Mercury.
