Beim Qualifying zum Rennen in Imola am Sonntag (15 Uhr, Sky und RTL live, Liveticker bei bild.de) spekuliert Experte Timo Glock (43) bei Sky: „Mick hat mehr Erfahrung als ein Franco Colapinto. Er wäre auf jeden Fall ein Kandidat, wenn Colapinto nicht abliefert. Er lernt ja auch jetzt noch weiter. In der WEC (Langstrecken-WM; d. Red.) ist er immer der schnellste von den drei Piloten seines Autos. Daher ist er definitiv eine Option.“

Wie lange sich Colapinto beweisen darf, ist offen. Direkt nach seiner Beförderung wurde Rennstall-Boss Flavio Briatore (75) in einer Pressemitteilung von Alpine folgendermaßen zitiert: „Die nächsten fünf Rennen geben uns Gelegenheit, mal etwas Neues auszuprobieren. Danach setzen wir uns zusammen und gehen unsere Optionen durch.“

In Imola widersprach Briatore gegenüber Sky Italia dann seinen eigenen Worten: „Ich habe gelesen, dass er fünf Rennen fahren soll. Das stimmt nicht, es gibt keine festgelegte Zahl. Er wird fahren, solange es nötig ist. Er muss schnell sein, darf keine Unfälle bauen und soll Punkte holen. Wenn er das gut macht, fährt er ewig.“
Immerhin bringt Colapinto südamerikanische Sponsoren – und auch viele Fans an die Strecke. In Imola sind argentinische Trikots überall zu sehen.

Leistung hingegen bringt er (noch) nicht. Im Qualifying schrottete er sein Auto, landete auf Platz 15.
Fährt er so weiter, könnte sich eine Chance für Mick Schumacher ergeben. Der sprach rund ums Rennen in Miami vor zwei Wochen auch mit Cadillac. Die Amerikaner steigen nächste Saison in die Formel 1 ein, haben noch keinen Fahrer offiziell verpflichtet.
