Würzburg Baskets
Die Löwen Braunschweig haben einen der kleinsten Etats der Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga. Aber das jüngste Team der Liga überraschte alle – und marschierte auf Platz drei der Hauptrunde. Doch damit ist noch nicht Schluss!
Zum Auftakt der Play-off-Viertelfinal-Serie (Best-of-5) schlugen sie die Fit/One Würzburg Baskets völlig verdient mit 92:79 (51:39). Sehr zur Freude ihres prominenten Gesellschafters.

Für Weltmeister Dennis Schröder (31) sind die Play-offs mit den Detroit Pistons schon vorbei. Darum ist der NBA-Star zum Übersommern mit seiner Familie in der Heimat. Natürlich saß der Hauptgesellschafter der Löwen daher am Spielfeldrand der Volkswagen Halle und feuerte seine Mannschaft an.
„Dennis hat einen recht großen Impact auf das Team“, sagte der beste BBL-Nachwuchsprofi Sananda Fru (21) im Dyn-Format „Bastis Corner“. „Man sieht ihn in jedem Sommer in Braunschweig, er ist da. Er guckt jedes Spiel, will einen pushen.“
[–>Die Braunschweiger waren zuletzt vor sechs Jahren in den Play-offs. Nur sieben Tage war dagegen das letzte Aufeinandertreffen der beiden Kontrahenten her. Am finalen Hauptrunden-Spieltag hatten sich das Team vom Trainer des Jahres Jesus Ramirez (45) durch ein 86:72 gegen Würzburg das wichtige Heimrecht gesichert.
Der Vorjahres-Halbfinalist musste dagegen schon vor dem Wiedersehen den ersten Rückschlag verkraften: Kapitän Zac Seljaas (27) verletzte sich im Abschluss-Training am Nacken, musste neben Center Owen Klassen (33/Knie) passen.
Die erste Hälfte – ein Offensiv-Spektakel zum Zungeschnalzen. Die Braunschweiger trafen im ersten Viertel sieben Dreier ohne einen einzigen Fehlversuch! Sogar der achte Distanzwurf in Folge flog zu Beginn der zweiten zehn Minuten durch den Ring. Besonders gut zielte dabei TJ Crockett (25), der die ersten neun Punkte seiner Mannschaft im Alleingang machte. Am Ende standen für den Top-Scorer 24 Zähler aut dem Statistik-Zettel.

Dann arbeiteten sich die Würzburger in die Partie – obwohl Braunschweig Jhivvan Jackson (26) an die Kette legte und per Ganzfeldpresse nahezu abmeldete. Der MVP kam „nur“ auf 14 Punkte und drei Vorlagen.
Auch der Start in die zweite Hälfte gehörte den Braunschweiger Dreier-Kaisern. Zwischenzeitlich kletterte die Quote von jenseits der 6,75-Meter-Linie auf bis zu 79 Prozent!
Noch mehr weh tat den Würzburgern aber die Szene in der 24. Minute: Löwe Chip Flanigan (29) rammte beim Zug zum Korb unabsichtlich Max Ugrai (29) den Ellenbogen an den Korb. Der Big Man blieb liegen und wurde mit einem Handtuch über dem Kopf in die Kabine geführt. Und setzte sich später mit einem Eisbeutel auf der Stirn auf die Bank. Würzburgs Trainer Sasa Filipovski (50) forderte Videobeweis, weil er ein absichtliches Foul gesehen hatte. Schiedsrichter Martin Matip guckte sich die Szene an und erkannte kein mutwilliges Verhalten: „Ugrai hat das Pech, dass er genau da steht.“

Mit noch einem großen Mann weniger hatten die Würzburger zunehmend Probleme. Der Rückstand wuchs zum ersten Mal auf 20 Punkte an (48:68). „Würzburg sieht gerade etwas müde aus“, stellte Dyn-Experte Heiko Schaffartzik (41) fest. Tatsächlich kam kein Aufbäumen mehr.
Würzburgs Riesen-Talent Hannes Steinbach (19/14 Punkte): „Unsere Defense war einfach nicht gut genug, um gegen Braunschweigs starke Offense standzuhalten. Und in der Offensive hatten wir nicht genug Geduld, um offene Würfe zu finden.“
Braunschweigs Ferdinand Zylka (27) hatte seinen Vertrag kurz vor den Play-offs bis 2028 verlängert. Umso glücklicher machte ihn der Traumstart: „Wie wir rausgekommen sind, war Wahnsinn. So muss man als Braunschweig eine Play-off-Serie starten. Wir haben von vornherein klargemacht, wie heiß wir auf diese Play-offs sind.“
