Jerry Jones made a big promise to Jaydon Blue that could put Cowboys rookie ahead of team’s RBs

There’s a saying among NFL analysts that you can find good running backs in any point of the draft nowadays. The Dallas Cowboys are certainly hoping that mantra holds true, as Jerry Jones‘ front office waited until the fifth and seventh rounds to address the position, doing so with Texas’ Jaydon Blue and Clemson’s Phil Mafah, respectively.

Those two will compete for touches with two veterans who signed in free agency, Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders. Given that both Williams and Sanders have underwhelmed over the past two seasons, the pathway is clear for either Blue or Mafah to siphon touches. Blue was the higher draft pick, and he possesses a skill that could earn him playing time immediately: elite pass-catching ability.

Jerry Jones envisions a big role for Jaydon Blue right out of the gate

That skill is what intrigued Jones and the Cowboys’ front office so much. In fact, despite being a fifth rounder, it sounds like Jones had big plans for Blue right out of the gate. Blue revealed something Jones told him in a conversation they had together during rookie camp.

Disappointment Looms Over NFL Draft: Cowboys and Bears Fail to Address Key Needs

Once I got to rookie minicamp, he pulled me to the side and had like a little conversation with me. And told me that I was going to be a big part to take this team to where it needed to be.

Blue has a much different physical and skillful profile to the other running backs on the roster. Williams and Sanders have caught plenty of passes throughout their NFL careers, but they lack explosiveness and speed. Mafah is a bruiser at 6-foot-1, 234 pounds.

Blue caught 42 passes for 368 yards and six touchdowns in his final season with the Texas Longhorns. He also ran a 4.38 forty-yard dash at the combine. His speed and pass-catching ability will put him on the field from day one, with real potential to take over as the Cowboys’ starting running back sooner than later.
