Hra s názvem Magnus Carlsen vs. Svět začala 4. dubna. Norský velmistr měl ze začátku převahu. Není divu, freestyle šach je jeho oblíbená disciplína, ve které před měsícem vyhrál turnaj v Německu. V této variantě jsou střelci, jezdci, věže, dámy a králové náhodně umístěni na šachovnici, ale pěšci zůstávají na svých klasických pozicích.

V průběhu hry se ale Svět zlepšil a Carlsen nenašel způsob, jak prolomit jeho obranu. Je nutné přiznat, že amatérští hráči, kteří o každém tahu hlasovali, si při rozhodování pomáhali šachovými programy. Obě strany měly na tah 24 hodin.

„Měl jsem pocit, že jsem po zahájení měl trochu navrch, ale možná jsem pak nehrál úplně přesně,“ komentoval hru Carlsen. „Upřímně, od té chvíle mi už nedali jedinou šanci.“

Hra skončila po 32 tazích, kdy Svět donutil Carlsena šachováním krále a opakováním pozic k remíze.

Velmistr ocenil výkon svých 143 000 protihráčů, kteří podle něj hráli „solidní šachy“. „Možná tým Svět nevybíral nejodvážnější tahy, ale držel se spíš tradičního stylu – což sice není vždy nejlepší strategie, ale tentokrát to vyšlo,“ dodal podle serveru The Guardian.

Hlavním účelem této hry bylo překonat rekord v počtu lidí, kteří se do partie zapojí. Poprvé jej stanovil Rus Garri Kasparov v roce 1999, kdy proti němu online hrálo 50 000 šachistů. Loni jej překonal Višvanáthan Ánand, kterému se postavilo 70 000 lidí. Carlsen sice partii indického velmistra překonal více než dvojnásobně, ale je prvním, kdo nevyhrál…
