The explosion forced a New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) worker to jump into the water, where he became trapped between the vessel and the dock and subsequently died.
Two other DEP employees who were working on the vessel were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. One of the injured refused medical attention.
Their health status is unknown at this time.
The recent accidents in New York waters
In early April, a helicopter crashed into the waters of the Hudson River and six people died in the incident.
While a couple of weeks ago, in the East River, a Mexican naval ship crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge and two crew members were killed.
The vessel, which was docked at the time of the explosion, was transporting untreated sewage from the city to a nearby treatment plant, police sources said.
Sources involved in the investigation claimed that a welding operation being carried out near the ship could be the cause of the explosion.
They also pointed out that untreated sewage is a major source of highly flammable methane gas.
FDNY officials said it was too early in their investigation to determine whether the explosion was accidental.
The NYPD’s Port Authority, Emergency Services Unit and Aviation Units responded to the scene, along with officials from the Department of Environmental Protection, the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and the FDNY.
Forensic doctors were also called to the scene on Saturday.
In a statement, the DEP said the deceased worker had been in the position for 33 years.
“The entire DEP family is grieving today,” said DEP Commissioner Rohit T. Aggarwala. “Our deceased employee was a valued and experienced member of the Bureau of Wastewater Treatment, and his decades of service reflect his commitment to the DEP’s mission.”
