McLaren opět potvrdil svou sílu, když jeho piloti v kvalifikaci zajeli první a třetí nejrychlejší čas. Mezi ně se vklínil jen Leclerc, jenž vyhrál všechny předchozí tréninky a věřil si i na obhajobu pole position z loňského roku, kdy domácí závod vyhrál.
Pro Norrise jde o druhý start z první pozice do Velké ceny v tomto roce. Poprvé to bylo v Austrálii, kde následující závod vyhrál. V letošní sezoně dosud kvalifikaci vyhráli jen tři jezdci. Norris dvakrát a Piastri s Verstappenem každý třikrát.
Pro Ferrari je druhé místo na startu letošním nejlepším výsledkem kvalifikace na hlavní závod. Lewis Hamilton už totiž vyhrál kvalifikaci na sprint v Číně. Hamilton v Monaku zajel čtvrtý nejrychlejší čas kvalifikace, ale propadl se pořadím o tři místa jako trest za překážení Verstappenovi v jeho rychlém kole.
Penalizace byly uděleny i Lanci Strollovi z Aston Martinu (1 místo za způsobení kolize s Leclercem v tréninku) a Oliveru Bearmanovi z Haasu (10 pozic za předjíždění pod červenou vlajkou v rámci tréninku).
Kvalifikace skončila pohromou pro Mercedes. Druhý tým v Poháru konstruktérů nedostal ani jednoho svého pilota do první desítky na startu. Andrea Kimi Antonelli na konci první části kvalifikace naboural do zdi a Georgi Russellovi vypověděl službu jeho monopost v druhé fázi kvalifikace.
Na okruhu v Monaku je výsledek kvalifikace stěžejní pro následující vývoj závodu. Uličky jsou zde úzké a opravdu těžko se předjíždí. Loni došlo k pouhým čtyřem změnám pořadí na trati a F1 se rozhodla zakročit. Představila letos nové pravidlo, které ukládá každému jezdci povinnost dvou zastávek v boxech a použití alespoň dvou různých směsí pneumatik. To otevírá spoustu možností a kombinací, které mohou závod ozvláštnit.

Letošní sezona seriálu formule 1 začala 16. března Velkou cenou Austrálie a končí 7. prosince v Abú Zabí. Titul mezi jezdci obhajuje Nizozemec Max Verstappen z Red Bullu a mezi stájemi britský McLaren.
