Even though the Los Angeles Chargers were crushed by the Houston Texans in the Wild Card round of the playoffs, the team showed a completely different face in 2024 under Head Coach Jim Harbaugh. In his first year leading the “Bolts,” he posted an impressive 11-6 record.
Harbaugh undoubtedly reignited hope among the Chargers’ few fans – and that’s not a jab, it’s just the reality. The team has long lacked a strong identity, which is why they moved from San Diego to Los Angeles. And the truth is, when SoFi Stadium fills up for a Chargers home game, it’s usually because of the visiting team.

Harbaugh is trying to change that. He’s already taken the first step by making the Chargers competitive in a tough division – the AFC West – home to Patrick Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs, Bo Nix’s Denver Broncos, and now the Las Vegas Raiders with Geno Smith. It’s a tough road ahead for the Chargers, but Justin Herbert’s talent could carry them through.
Jim Harbaugh wants to make the Chargers a team as threatening as the Chiefs
The Chargers already made the playoffs; now they need to start winning in those situations. First, though, they’ll have to beat Patrick Mahomes – and it seems like they’re heading in the right direction. On the Up and Adams show, Chargers insider James Palmer made a bold statement:
“I think the Chargers have a slightly better chance of dethroning the Chiefs, and I think it’s mainly because of what they have at the quarterback position. When you need elite guys, right? And Justin Herbert, in terms of arm talent and his ability to run…”

Harbaugh’s ambitions are massive. He essentially placed a huge responsibility on Justin Herbert after making a powerful declaration that his goal is to turn his quarterback into a Hall of Famer:
“I woke up the other day and said, ‘I have to get Justin Herbert into the Hall of Fame. I must do it,'” said the Head Coach on The Rich Eisen Show.
Herbert posted modest numbers in 2024 compared to previous seasons, which means he is gradually adjusting to Jim Harbaugh’s system. The former Oregon standout threw 504 passes – 80 fewer than the year before – but had only three interceptions and closed the season with a 7-2 run.
Heads up – Harbaugh and Herbert’s first challenge in 2025 will be facing the Chiefs, and not in the United States. They’ll travel to Brazil to kick off the season in a blockbuster matchup between Kansas City and Los Angeles.
