Facing an event as big and pressured as the Super Bowl, the 73-year-old coach chose not to neglect these situations in order to achieve success.
During a special episode of ACC Huddle, hosted by ESPN’s Rece Davis, Bill Belichick sat down with Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney and discussed these small problems that can plague his players.
Although missing a flight or being assigned the wrong room can be considered a task that can be delegated, Bill admitted that he used to be the one who took care of these situations. His “Belichick Travel Agency,” as he joked, ensured his players’ concentration and performance.
“It’s all part of game prep” he said. “If you can eliminate stressors for your players, that’s coaching too.”
Swinney quickly agreed, stating that Clemson follows a similar philosophy, prioritizing its players: “That includes making sure their parents know where to park and what gate to enter,” said Dabo.
Finally, Bill summed up the situation, identifying the key to his success and also demonstrating his concern for the players under his charge, stating that: “If you can get the small stuff right, it gives you a better shot at getting the big stuff right, too.”
