After Shedeur Sanders played his first snaps in front of the media during the Browns’ organized team activities (OTAs), the hype surrounding him continued to grow following reports of his impressive stats. Sanders played 9 snaps, threw 3 touchdowns-the most among the quarterbacks-and wasn’t intercepted.
Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel each played 16 snaps, while Joe Flacco played 14. None came close to Sanders’ 77.8% completion rate. Flacco had a 64.3% completion rate, Pickett recorded 56.3%, and Gabriel posted 68.8%-but he was the only one intercepted.

With all that in mind, the buzz around the ex-Buffaloes QB kept growing and growing on social media – but one major fact was being left out.

While Sanders’ numbers sound truly impressive – especially compared to a 17-year NFL veteran and a former Steelers starting QB – the reality is, they were not under the same conditions.
Browns reporter Mary Kay Cabot added the crucial context that had been missing, giving a clearer perspective on Sanders’ performance during OTAs: “Shedeur Sanders, as we so aptly told everybody yesterday, did not take one rep in 11-on-11s,” Cabot said on the The Rich Eisen Show.
“He has to come in here as the fourth-string quarterback and work his way up that depth chart. So he did not take a team rep. He did not have Mason Graham in his face yesterday at all,” she later added.
For now, the media hasn’t had access to another Browns practice, and it appears Sanders will need to earn his opportunity to take team reps under Head Coach Kevin Stefanski.
