Kate Middleton gives a lesson in staying fit as she recovers from the illness that put the British royals on edge

Kate’s fitness regime reportedly includes a significant amount of strength training, a method she prefers without the guidance of a personal trainer. Strength training has become increasingly popular, moving beyond its old association with bodybuilders.

Fitness coach Kate Rowe-Ham explains, “Strength training is critical because we naturally lose muscle mass (a condition known as sarcopenia) and bone density as we age. It’s not just about aesthetics – it impacts posture, metabolism, energy levels, and even independence later in life.” This highlights why incorporating weight training is essential for overall health.

Nikkita Hope-Brown, owner of Found, a women-only strength training studio in London, shares similar sentiments. “Strength training is by far the most time-efficient way to work out,” she says. “You can increase the intensity by adding more weight and doing fewer reps, which yields genuine results fast.” This makes it an excellent choice for busy individuals like Kate who want effective workouts without spending hours in the gym.

If you’re looking to follow in Kate’s footsteps, starting small is key. Fitness expert Penny Weston recommends weight training exercises three times a week. “You don’t need to lift super heavy weights. Resistance bands are a great alternative as they put less pressure on the joints while still building strength,” she advises. Simple bodyweight movements like squats, lunges, push-ups, and planks are excellent starting points.

Diet also plays a crucial role in achieving fitness goals. As Kate Rowe-Ham points out, “Muscles are built in the gym but recover and transform in the kitchen.” A high-protein diet is essential for muscle recovery and growth. Nikkita adds, “Proteins are the bricks that make up the wall, and strength training is the bricklaying. You need both to build muscle.”

For those on a budget, strength training doesn’t require fancy equipment or a personal trainer. With dedication and some basic tools like resistance bands or light weights, you can achieve incredible results and embrace a fitness routine fit for royalty.
